Meta that isn't fiction doesn't fill an assignment (you might be able to get away with it under the rule about poetry/if/other odd formats if they're OK'd in the letter, you might not, but definitely not if there's nothing about it in the details/letter.)

You might be able to get away with in-universe meta (i.e. ecology of vampires as written as an essay by a local scientist) for a worldbuilding request, and you could probably do it as a Madness treat if it wasn't DNW'd, but otherwise, no.

This! The requirement is to write "a story of at least 1,000 words."

Meta (at least in the classical fandom definition of the term) is *not* a story. It could be fiction(al) but it's still not a story. Neither is poetry and other text forms that may or may not be fiction, but are also not prose.

They are all opt-in formats. If people ask for them, great. If they don't, absolutely not.

Yeah, you can do meta-fiction depending on the canon and requests (my match the year is on an extremely metafictional canon, my story is definitely going to have meta elements in that sense) as long as you write it in a format that passes as a prose story, maybe that's what the person in chat thought was being asked?

You definitely can't do "this is why my pairing is canon, here's the evidence" or "thoughts on yaoi" type meta though.

As someone who loves writing in-universe meta (and loves worldbuilding exchange with a wild passion for exactly this reason), I would consider it opt-in.

Ok cool - that's what I thought. I'm definitely good with in-universe docs etc and opted into them but that's not what I thought when I read "meta". But if it's a broader definition that encompasses fiction then that makes sense.

Thanks!
