it's not the author's fic, it's the recip's gift. and i think they should both default, lol. perhaps we should all default.

Assuming you have average writing ability, what's the minimum time to spend writing a Yuletide gift? 5 hours? 10 hours? 20?

so do you write fic only for yourself? well you do you then, kinda defeats the purpose of exchanges though.

Do you really think you could write a proper Yuletide gift in just 5 hours? What kind of drugs are you?

Re: Minimum time to spend on a Yuletide gift

(Anonymous) 2024-12-02 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
depends on how long the fic is

5 hours of actual writing time? If it’s only a couple thousand words that’s fine. Hopefully more time was spent in review/research/brainstorming but 5 to write it seems fine.

You can write a decent 1k fic in less time than that - even two hours - if you have a clear idea of what you're going for and you let it rest to polish it a bit later. Which just illustrates how arbitrary it is to make hours a meaningful measurement.

The world's fastest typist can apparently manage 305 words per minute, so the minimum time appears to be roughly three minutes and seventeen seconds.

I kind of like this idea but also I worry that if I posted a short fic, it would make it even less likely that I'd actually finish my long fic idea.

Me, 5min before the posting deadline: eh, no rush, I still have a minute and forty seconds before I have to get started

Personally I'd hate to click a fic with a bunch of interesting incest tags and then be disappointed when it all turns out to just be platonic gen like the OP describes.

one unknowingly incestual kiss, angsting about accidental incest

Consider AO3 load times and everyone else having the same idea.

You're right, you're right - I'll plan in about 6 minutes then, and if I have a minute or two left over at the end I can just write a treat!

I laughed because this honestly does seem to be some people's thought processes.

Unnervingly enough, my assignment is done and posted bar additional tags. I'm normally frantically editing/adding a bit in the last hours before collection opens so this is really, really weird for me. I can actually work on a treat...

Oh, coalie, you forgot to budget time to think of a snappy title! Think that'll take at least 12 minutes.

No, he simply can't be accepted as a nomination. You could write about Trump in a High School Musical fic, for example.

tbh, I think you're lowballing the time for tags. That takes at least another two months for me...

tbf if your recipient didn't request him and you wrote about him for no damn reason you'd probably get a slap on the wrist at the very least.
