It works different for everyone. I'm enjoying my gifts far more since I've started shaking them. I can get the "oh no, I'm not getting a gift in fandoms X and Y" disappointment (which happens inevitably, no matter which fandom I get, because I love all my fandoms equally and I'm happy with whatever fandom I get, but it also means mourning all the other fandoms I requested) out of the way long before reveals and I can prepare myself for whatever length the gift is and get over that initial disappointment when it's very short until I read it.

Nah, no regrets. I was glad I knew what it wasn't while I was waiting to find out what it was. And it's not like I wrote it off completely, I still had hopes as well as fears.

DA I prefer to set baseline expectations and then be pleasantly surprised if I’m wrong than the other way around.
