When I got back into exchange fandom I had to ask what the deal with aurae was because I had blessedly missed those years.

What *is* the deal with Aurae? I vaguely recognize the name but if I was around for it, it didn't stick in the memory. Was that one of the sockpuppeteers?

Absolutely creepy fandom participant mainly in Star Wars. Frogboiled her exchange participation by graaadually increasing the number of her sock accounts in exchanges (all pretending they had nothing to do with each other of course) while writing DNWs that contradicted her requests and throwing a fit if people couldn't figure out how to thread the needle. Made a weird sick game out of giving people things they didn't think to DNW; I particularly remember she wrote an alpha/alpha original fic with random pet mutilation & death in the first few paragraphs. Wanked up a storm on ffa, constantly playing up the theme of how you couldn't prove it was her.

Extraordinarily prolific: sometimes signed up to exchanges with 8 accounts at a time, and turned in most of her assignments (quality varied).

Mods gradually lost patience with her, especially after someone used R-Stylo, a text analysis tool, to give compelling evidence that several of her socks were the same person. The most glorious blow against her came when she signed up to a round of Rare Male Slash Exchange and the mod matched all of her accounts to write for the same dummy account, which had been added to the participant list at the last second. Notably, that round involved someone wanking anonymously at top volume about how it was such bad modding for a mod to close sign-ups precisely on time.

She reappeared briefly this year under new accounts, as rumor has it, and was kicked out of May the 4th. If she's been active since, she's been stealthy.

Honestly, Novamist's grindset is kind of admirable compared to Aurae who wanted to make as many people miserable with near-DNWs as possible.

Two other details about the socktopus:

- The DNW "not touching you" game she played culminated in her writing toddlercon for someone who hadn't DNWed underage.

- Her fics were often extremely low-effort, word-padding bullshit. This meant that once, one of her fics included a step-by-step for a character making vegan chilli in it. IIRC, it was a fic for nonconathon or consent issues.

- Her own ridiculous DNWs meant she often asked the mods for emergency pinch hits.

She was a real dickhead.

The part that always cracks me up about the vegan chili part is that she posted two works for two different exchanges in the same month, both of which had the characters making vegan chili. Talk about desperate measures.

The nonconathon one stood out because it was such obvious padding. It actually worked and was relevant in the other story, which was a character's food blog for Unconventional Fanworks.

My favorite example: requesting Vader/Luke, DNWing unrequested ships, asking for an EPH because the fic mentioned Padme.

My 'favorite' was when she requested Luke/Rey/Kylo for a flash exchange and DNWed all AUs then demanded an emergency pinch hit when flipflop_diva wrote a story where the three characters were together. (The characters were never alive on the same planet at the same time.) It remains the one time everyone on the exchange scene except Aurae unilaterally declared FFD to be not the asshole.
