I also kudosed the gay bashing dragon fic back in the day because I read it before the drama came out about what the recip actually requested... I don't tend to read people's signups along with their giftfics, so how was I supposed to know?

As a proper exchange participant you are required to open each recipient's letter and signup in other tabs while you are reading and go line by line through each fic to confirm the gift meets the required tags, does not hit a DNW, and does not go near enough to the line of a DNW that some rando on FFA can claim the writer was playing DNW chicken instead of simply staying on the side of the DNW line. You must also have their journal or blog open to scroll back for all posts about their families, their identities, and their previous gifts in order to discern if this gift is spitefic. If you fail to do all this yet leave a comment or kudos on the gift which turns out to have violated exchange etiquette in some way, you are a monster.
