If it's got fans, it's a fandom. Things like ads and object and concept anthropomorphism aren't canons, and yet they have fans.

Those are canons, though. There's pre-existing material that you make transformative work from.

Original work is not transformative.

It's transformative of overall trends and styles within the community.

Take any 20 original works written for an exchange and compare them to, say, any 20 original stories written in a creative writing class. They're not the same thing, even if you then decide to re-design this theoretical creative writing class so that it focuses on speculative fiction or romance. Original Works is a genre that comes with a lot of pre-set ideas, and a lot of the nominated characters and relationships show the influence of fandom interests.

Of course they are the same thing. Doing original fiction in the most tedious of Ao3 house style with the most recycled trappings doesn't make it transformative or give it a canon to transform.
