It's partly because we're smaller. Partly because most of the least chill people in fandom refuse to go in unmoderated spaces anymore - what if they saw something hateful and couldn't go yelling to Mod??, so the people left here are mostly the ones who actually know how to self-mod and not encourage trolls.

I think you're lucky. I've been on FFA for years and I've never been insulted with slurs. In a few months here I've been called the r- slur and "autistic" in a derogatory way.

People over there tend to be vile in more complex drawn out ways. Someone just calling you a faggot is easily discarded as a troll or idiot, and you both move on but when you get dragged into some 50 comment long fight trying to prove that you are the better person and the other one is the homophobe actually things get really nasty.
