And another one!

I see my nemesis getting a fic that I love
And I'm like, "Fuck you"
I guess my 10k letter wasn't enough
I'm like, "Fuck you and fuck morbane, too"
Said, "If I was a long commenter, they woulda gamed for me"
Ha, now ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still comment it's the best
And runs to coal to shout "Fuck you"

To me the main difference is, if you finish a passable version of your assignment early, that's just... finishing a passable version of your assignment.

Maybe I'm a few years behind (like rosencrantz said, language drift - and other people in the channel gave different examples of how they used it too) but to me a bus pass always has regret implicit. "I wanted this story to be better, but at least I have a bus pass," and people used to only say it very close to or after the deadline.

It is not a bad thing to have a solid-but-could-be-improved story weeks ahead of deadline. It's wonderful actually. But given how the term used to be used, it's like saying "This isn't my best effort but it's acceptable, I've come to terms with that" when you have weeks to make it better, because it used to mean "I had bigger ambitions and I scaled them down" or "I am acutely aware of the rough spots BUT it's postable".

+100

That's really well put. This is how I use bus pass too.

I don't know, I've been around awhile and while I don't hang out on the Yuletide discord, I've never really seen it with a time aspect on it. You say it at posting deadline to mean you plan to edit before reveals, or you say it close to reveals to mean you're proud of not defaulting but not much else, but those aren't the only times you can say it. I've always basically used it to mean "I've hit the minimum requirements and now I don't have to stress about defaulting, accidentally or otherwise, while I revise and expand" - I always bus pass post my first acceptable draft no matter how early because I never do know when something will happen and knock me down enough that I don't have the energy for more. Especially at a time of year when work gets weird and I plan a lot of travel and winter disease season is starting and it's dark out and I could get hit by a bus.

And sure, there's regret if I don't have the energy for more! That definitely is part of a bus pass. But tbh there's never been a yuletide where I didn't regret not having the energy for more, no matter how far past my bus pass I got, how many revisions I did or tens of thousands of words I ended up writing. Some people just operate that way.
