I dropped one I'd been requesting for years because I did end up getting a fic for it, and the fic was coal. Earnestly written coal where the author did their best to incorporate my likes, but coal nonetheless. I left a nice comment but I just don't want to risk matching to that person again.

Similar except that getting the coal made me realize I didn't even like the fandom that much.

(And I'm not sure I can describe it as earnest, it was 1001 words of plotless character study, I think charitably we can go with my author not understanding what makes a good gift)

Plotless character study can be a great gift! At the hands of a good author, which yours doesn't sound like they were.

Yeah, ODAO and all but if you didn't give any indication that you wanted a plotless character study I wouldn't describe that as earnest either. I'm willing to give my author the benefit of the doubt because they did clumsily touch on some things I prompted in the 1001 words they gave me and I'm not owed a good fic, but it was still disappointing. Hope we both have better luck this year!
