If you’re asking earnestly, Ace by Angela Chen is a great read and dives into the history of the a-spec community, the history of the term itself and its definitions, and reasons people might use the term if they are a not… a gold star ace, if you will.

A lot of these things that look contradictory or confusing make sense once you know more about the community and its history! Even if there are people using the term because they want to be “speshul”, that means there’s something about that term/community that they want to be part of or that resonates with them IME. Not easy to intuit for an outsider, but that doesn’t mean it’s just random nonsense.

I mean, like, I have read that tumblr post. And that other one. Where it felt like maybe the person had some shame issues to unpack or some harmful religious nonsense coming through. But most of the time people are just figuring themselves out and it isn't about anyone else.

What's a funny or unusual weakness for an alien to have that would seem very unexpected to a human? The alien biology in this canon is very flexible so pretty much anything is up for grabs. Think Vulcans being intoxicated by chocolate, along those lines.

To be fair to them, that was back when we were still doing "Dear Santa" letters and "stocking stuffers" and stuff - they did really de-christmasify it after that.

My absolute favorite is the concept that they might be at risk of getting pregnant from things like being in certain air temperatures or smelling certain smells - lots of Earth creatures are either parthenogenetic or their bodies store up reproductive material after mating until conditions are right, at which point a pregnancy starts spontaneously, so I like imagining an intelligent species that evolved in a resource-poor environment being like "Is there citrus in this? If I eat citrus I might get pregnant" or "STOP FLASHING THE REC ROOM LIGHTS UNLESS YOU WANT ME TO LAY EGGS AGAIN"
