I never know what these are before I see them. For me, the dream prompt is just a combination of fandom, pairing and trope that makes my id sit up say 'yes'. If I knew what was going to make me feel that way I'd already have written it.

I always thought fandom meant the fans, collectively. Changing it to mean the canon itself seems to have been an AO3 thing.

I do this too! My Yuletide prep is a third canon review; a third recipient background check; a third general atmosphere and thematic inspo.

Every year I tell myself if I get in too deep, I can always just write a short story that will meet the requirements, but it’s both fun and also what distinguishes YT from other exchanges for me to really dig into the canon and what kind of recipient I have, and to try to come up with something thoughtful. My recipients have always appreciated it a lot, so I guess I’ve had good matches over the years! This one wrote all the best fic in this teeny fandom, and based on their stories I’m extra motivated to do something unusual.

Yeah, it's the reason I still prefer looking at letters instead of the app. I know if I use the app I'm not going to see anything except the small handful of fandoms I know well enough to bookmark. I'd never pick up any new canons that way.

Kind of, not in exactly the same way. I review canon and take notes on little things like setting details that could come up in a story. Once I start writing I sometimes review some of the canon again to make sure I have the characters' voices in my head. How much outside research I do depends on what I'm writing.

I almost never read other fic though. I try to make sure I'm writing directly from my impression of canon and not fanon.

In this case my recipient has written several stories in the fandom and commented on others, so I read the former carefully and skimmed the later just so I could carve my own niche/make sure no one had done my exact idea yet.

They happen but I can never predict them!

I suppose if I had to be more specific, my dream prompt is something that aligns closely with a vague previous idea or WIP. But it offers a new spin on it that finally allows me to pull the piece together.
