I sometimes do this to tell an author I like the bit and to bring the error to their attention if they want to fix it. It's like a discreet nudge with plausible deniability.

eh, it's all right. it's passably nice and it's pretty much what i asked for, but it's also clearly just-over-minimum, fuck-it-it's-up and i can just tell that the writer was glad to get it over and done with. i left a sizable comment and i thanked them, but honestly i'm more in it for comments/reception on my OWN assignment (as self-centred as that sounds). I think i did a good job. i hope it reaches its target audience.

No, it's worse when they don't, because then you can't just silently fix it without making it look like they were the one who typo'ed.

The Pern fics are all enjoyable but I won't comment or kudos them until the recips do. Once burned, twice shy and all that.

The Scholomance fics I've read so far have all been good.

Personally, I think you should absolutely kudos and comment fics before the recips (especially because you have no way of knowing if the recip will ever show up).

I suspect AYRT is shying away from that in this case because there have been some issues with people being gifted DNWs in Pern fandom in the past.

A wild Madness treat just appeared! It's my first time EVER getting a treat! I'm sooo thankful (and feeling a bit guilty, because I did not manage to write any treats myself this time).

I’ve been there and I believe maybe a couple people said this because they got a crap gift.

I'm good with not fic in many circumstances, like if you're funny. My gift kinda wants to be funny but isn't, and otherwise just...isn't. I think this is the second blackest coal I've gotten, right after the one that got me an EPH.

Do not feel guilty! Some years you get treats and some years you write treats. It all works out. (And you deserve a treat)
