yay or nay?

A classic topic.

I think if you want ships and/or porn you should talk about how much you love your ships and/or porn. Never, never give actual prompts for gen scenarios you don't want. But talk enough about what you like about the characters that a gen writer going ODAO can figure out something that touches on why you like them.

Honestly, smut only-prompts that are just "pegging, facials, watersports" and nothing else aren't a guarantee of good porn either, so you might as well give actual prompts.

I give ship only prompts for those canons I want ship fic for, and gen only prompts for those I want gen for (and dnw ship fic for the latter). I like smut, but would never leave smut only prompts.

Of course, authors can still ODAO on my ship fic requests, but I would never provide a gen out. If I get gen for a ship request I'll just leave a thank you for writing for me comment if it's my main gift. Gen treats will be rejected outright.

Sounds solid to me. Do you usually get gifts you like?

Mostly. I think I've got one or two meh gifts but never had to reject any. Have had a good mix of ship and gen gifts I like.

This.

If the only thing you ask for is porn, I will ignore your prompts entirely.

Do people actually do this? I've never personally seen it but I've heard about it happening.

Re: gen outs

(Anonymous) 2023-09-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think people say things like that but it doesn't actually happen much.

You might get a writer who can't do porn, so they won't do porn. But most people don't respond to restrictive prompts by deliberately going in the opposite direction on purpose.

I can write smut, but NGL I would be pretty annoyed if it was someone's one and only prompt for what we matched on.

If I got a prompt that was literally only smut stuff - like the "pegging, facials, watersports" example above - I would absolutely ignore it entirely. They haven't given any options for someone who doesn't want to write smut for their ship, and they haven't shown enough respect for how Yuletide is supposed to work for me to bother going to the mods for alternate prompts.

If you give me a little bit about why you like the ship + some smut things + why you think those smut things would work with those characters, I will at least try to give you something that touches on the dynamic you like, though.

(Well. For that *specific* example I would probably write about a lakeside vacation where they go parasailing, have a spa visit, and spend some time doing traditional woodworking to build new furniture for the cabin. But in general I would ignore that with no qualms.)

I like the idea of you doing this but I can only see this as one of those things no one does. It's so much extra effort for a point they will never get.

As someone who is really bad at writing smut and also not great at thinking ideas from zero, this would honestly be the easiest route for me…

Yes, unfortunately, they do. I've dropped offers because of it twice. Once was a letter that had exactly one prompt, which was a very specific noncon porn scenario between characters who barely interact in canon. The other one was a letter that straight up said "I only want porn for this request, if you aren't willing to write me porn please default."

Re: gen outs

(Anonymous) 2023-09-18 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ever want porn for all my requests tbh

but I just repeatedly deal with the miserable disappointment of receiving barely more than gen instead of saying so and drawing the wrath of anon

Re: gen outs

(Anonymous) 2023-09-19 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the "please default" that would really make me want to write bland gen out of spite.

Re: gen outs

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ngl, I would write the blandest gen in that situation too. That 'please default' can get fucked though - do you think that counts as porn by the recipient's metric?

Yes they do do this. One letter just said "Sex 'em up" for each fandom, nothing more, nothing less.

Yay if you really want it

Re: gen outs

(Anonymous) 2023-09-19 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Nay if you're requesting a canon couple from an already smutty/romance-based fandom.

Re: gen outs

I don't usually prompt them but ODAO and all that.

If you actually want gen, you should prompt for it, but then it's not an "out". If you don't want gen and only prompt for it because you feel you're obligated to, don't.

Your writer isn't a mindreader. They can't magically tell the difference between prompts you want and prompts you don't want and will assume all your prompts are things you actually enjoy.

TL;DR: Don't prompt for things you don't want.
