As someone who has treated in Madness multiple years: alas, yes. It really is just a nice thing you do for your recip, because they are probably the only person who will click on your fic.

But, also, I went through the Madness collection this year and didn't see anything I'd rec (aside from my fic, obviously, which is a perfect jewel of blinding genius). The ratio of cool stuff to bland nothings in Madness is not high enough to merit a lot of sifting through the chaff.

In conclusion: a really strategic author should reserve their wankiest treat for Madness, where it will be safe from the Claw.

As someone who reads, comments and recs from Madness, I disagree. It has just as much nice stuff as the main collection. The main is just bigger, so the proportion of fandoms any given reader knows is makes for a larger quantity of fic.
