That one is weird. It just gets so grim. The character starts out reasonably happy with his life and then his existence at the Weyr is all depressed and liminal, plus the manipulative "friend". How did this writer make impressing a bronze dragon depressing? It sounds like they wanted to write a realistic gender take and just got too much in their own head about "well this wouldn't work out happily". Which is, okay, true to canon, but it seems like they should have given it some time and reflected on it or got a beta reader's help because an appropriate gift for this person should have leaned back towards hopeful rather than eking out an existence.
