I just read it and yeah, there's no other way to interpret that. I also checked, and the recipient tends to leave long comments, including on their other two yuletide fic this year. The fact that the Pern one has no comment at all is a pretty obvious indicator the recipient isn't thrilled.

I guess that this is the author's attempt to write the recip's request exploration of gender roles in McCaffrey's world, but what a dumpster fire way to do it. Especially since the recip requests no unhappy endings, and this fic ends with the MC being SA'd on what is apparently a regular basis by an ex-friend and being actively concerned that they will be outed and assaulted by dragonriders in the future.

The trans character later being au fait with the idea of their dragon shagging the rapist’s dragon confuses the issue a little but still I can’t see how you’re supposed to interpret that scene as anything except “the cost of my not outing you after stalking you is we fuck”.

Exactly. It felt like the author was trying to make the rape okay because now there's at least one person who's dragon the trans character's dragon could mate with without it revealing their trans status, because he already knows and like, that still doesn't make it okay? Even by this canon's own particular definition of consent?
