As a person of color and a former student of foreign languages, I felt so seen and utterly bowled over by Kuang's work. It yanked me back to my college experiences—in both good and exceedingly ugly ways. I'd like to see that push-pull of fascination with and love of learning juxtaposed with the backbreaking pain and rage of having your soul repeatedly spat on by your institution :')

This type of opener is exactly why I didn't offer this book.
