I remember Across the Nightingale Floor being kind of popular when I was a kid, but I never read it.

Damn, I hated that book so much when I read it in college. But it looks like they're requesting the sequel novel, which I think is just one book that takes place after the trilogy?

why did you hate it?

/purely curious, I have almost no knowledge of it

It takes place in a kind of fantasy Japan (the protagonist is a ninja in training), but it treats the setting as fun window dressing rather than a living, breathing culture. A lot of the characters are persecuted "Christians", which is a thing that happened in Japan sure, but at the time I was really frustrated in finding a book series about fantasy Sengoku that went out of its way to makes its protags as white-seeming as possible. I know the author studied in Japan but it felt to me that you could have changed just the character/place names and you'd never know it wasn't a run of the mill western fantasy, other than they eat a lot of rice.

It's been 20 years so I don't remember the plot so well, other than I hated that too. There's a really flat het romance that's underdeveloped and goes nowhere. The event the book built up to passed without much fanfare. I never finished the trilogy.

But maybe the sequel is better? Hahaha, not helping the case of this pinch hit, sorry!

Thanks for the explanation! I was worried it was something like that. I guess it's mildly interesting to see if the author got better about that later in the series... Harsh Cry of the Heron is available through my library so I might put a reserve on it, but that won't work for claiming it now. (Could help if whoever picks up the PH bails later in the year.)

I put my hand up for one. We'll see if someone volunteered first.
