How does writing fiction come into this? God, you're dumb.

We’re back to the fantasies thing.

You seem under the very misguided assumption that everyone treats RPF as a face claim for their completely internal daydreams, but it takes 0.2 seconds of looking at any fandom with a significant sexual assault event to see that fans do absolutely think they’re perceiving the reality of their fave, and therefore the real accusations of rape and abuse cannot be true, because the real version of their real fave would never.

Even assuming you’ve found a bubble where none of the fandom thinks like this, which there is a 0% chance of, why is it so important to you that you never let go of this completely fictional version of a rapist, and also never ever be perceived as someone who just likes a rapist, despite acting exactly like everyone else who likes a rapist?

There are no rapists in my RPF fandom (or well, there are almost certainly rapists, probably many of them, but it's such a toxic environment that it would never be made public, or have consequences for anyone because it's a misogynist, bigoted hellplace, so officially, there are No Rapists (™)). What I find weird is this assumption that people automatically like the RPF characters they write about.

Like, if anyone looks at my twitter or DW, they will see me raging against the people I've written about a lot and cursing them to hell. I will still write fluffy romance about them. My version of them is 1 million times better than the real version. That's the point. This is the reason I write fic. To fix shit that I hate.

I don't know what to tell you except that you can't "fix" a rapist by writing fic where they're not a rapist, and trying in even a small, personal way to overwrite the reality where they raped someone is going to strike a lot of people as disrespectful to their victims.

See, I get that, but it's also fine if people don't care why you're writing your fluffy romance fic. This is just a fic exchange, not a puzzle where learning someone's intentions has RL rewards or consequences.

For me the part I don't get is why fluffy romance fic of them. I completely get the desire to take a horrible person IRL and explore them in fiction, but for me personally the fluffy part is where I lose the plot because I don't want to read about, say, Rishi Sunak falling in love with Jacob Rees Mogg or Jeff Bezos having a nice dinner with someone or, idk, Roman Polanski's loving spouse. Maybe Sunak topping JRM in dirtybad hatesex or Bezos getting his ass kicked or Polanski being forced into noncon sex slavery.

That said, if I noticed my YT recip was way into writing about Insert Sex-Offender Celeb Here I probably wouldn't bother to write them spitefic. But I might default.

Anyone falling in love with Jacob Rees Mogg sounds oddly entertaining.

You don't think making him fall in love with Jacob Rees-Mogg would be torment enough?

You could absolutely write an amazing fic where Rishi Sunak's life and/or career is ruined because he can't stop thinking about Jacob Rees Mogg's thicc cheeks or something and I'd probably read it. Just as long as it isn't fluffy! :D

See, you're missing an important point! Ridicule. Comedy is a weapon, and cracky fluff is a more powerful attack than dirtybadwrong darkfic. :)

But that's how it happens, see. You stumble onto an amazing novel-length fic about Penny Mordaunt literally having BoJo's balls in a vise, and next thing you know you're going, but what if we lived in a world where Rees-Mogg and Sunak had a sweet love affair that made their hearts grow three sizes and then solved all of the UK's social problems? I'd like to live in a world for awhile, I think.

That's because you have a different sense of deconstruction. Writing schmoopy mpreg about someone you loathe for being hateful and the exact opposite of nice schmoopy things is cathartic for many.

I can only answer for myself, and it's simply because I only write and read fluffy romance. That's all I care for in fanfic.

Though I very much support the idea of someone writing "shitty celeb has a no good very bad day and it's amazing" RPF.

I'm realizing that I think I have differences depending on type/class of shittiness too. Terrible politicians I can read a wider range of RPF about than IRL nonpolitical sex offenders (though when a politician is a known IRL sex offender, like, say, Dennis Hastert in the US, the sex offenderness overpowers the politician). Maybe because in my brain we can't escape the hold of politicians as easily as we can just ignore rapist actors like Spacey, so in my brain it makes more sense to say "yeah fuck Spacey" and never write about him again than to say "yeah, fuck the House of Windsor" or "yeah, fuck Joe Biden" and never write about them. I guess maybe I see "writing RPF of known terrible people" as a "thing to do as a last-resort option only," which other people don't.

(This doesn't make much sense! Brains are fucked.)

Brains are super weird. I'm pro RPF in general. Actors, musicians, sports people - it's all good. But for some reason, I balk at the idea of politician RPF and mentally kneejerk to "people shouldn't write this" (before reminding myself that this is dumb and hypocritical and people can write whatever they like). It somehow feels more... real to me than writing about actors etc? Possibly because I'm convinced that people in the entertainment industry all have a public persona that has nothing to do with who they really are while politicians are the same shitty people in private as in public, idk.

I think plenty of people do separate out their idea of their favourite from the actual person but even then the fact that they are willing to keep publicly writing about the public persona of a rapist does actually tell me something about their priorities and tbh it's not great even in a best case scenario. The fact that you can look at a person who raped another human being and be like "ok but in MY story he would never, and I'm just going to set aside the fact that he raped someone so I can continue to have fun playing make believe in public" is just fundamentally distasteful to me. And that's extending the absolute best faith to everyone involved, because one glance at rpf fandoms does show that there's a very broad spectrum of how good people are at separating fiction from reality and most of them fall somewhere in the middle.

Your inability to understand what you are being told is astounding.

I understand it just fine. I just still think what you do for fun is gross and wouldn't write you fic.

I am not in this equation. I am just annoyed by your arrogant silliness all over coal.

You get that some of the people you're arguing with don't write RPF at all, right?
