They are not the same, either probabilistically or holistically. If you have 100 people trying to make it work, some of them will succeed. 20? 50? Probably about half. You'll get 50 post-deadline pinch hits out of it, give-or-take.

If you have 100 people waiting for gifts and defaulting, that will result in 100 pinch hits.

Regardless, intentions matter. As a human, I'm happy to give you the chance and deal with the resulting work if you're trying. But not if you're sitting back counting your profits and sneering.
