Don't Stop Coal Now!

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real coal time
I feel alive
And the exchange I'll turn it inside out, yeah
I'm floating around in agony
So, (don't stop me now)
(Don't stop me)
'Cause I'm having a coal time, having a coal time~

Boundaries are healthy and a sign of matured adulthood and often legally required.

Creators shouldn’t read your content because then you can sue them if they “accidentally” copy it.

Pornstars shouldn’t have to show their parents their work just to prove they’re not ashamed. Strangers and people you know shouldn’t have to be in the room while you fuck, or create fictional art about fucking, in order for you to prove you aren’t “ashamed”.

Your bullshit Psych 101 opinion is so basic and misinformed I genuinely feel bad for you. I’m glad that you at least have enough sense to say such silly bitch shit on anon.

NC You sound oddly defensive.

0/10 "NC"

I'm the CYRT and I agree with NC here. You're exactly the kind of overly defensive person I was talking about.

If you're so worried about your fic being found by the big scary world out there, then lock it down. Or don't share it in the first place.

But nope, y'all really wanna post your fanfic on the internet in a publicly accessible place and then have a meltdown when the public can access it.

Damn, looks like the bait shop is having a new year sale.

+1

Given the history of fandom intersecting with TPTB, I'm concerned with the property creator liking the cute gen I wrote for their canon, then discovering the incestuous noncon I also wrote for their canon and losing their shit. I'm not ashamed of my fic. I'm concerned that the creator is going to turn out to be bugfuck insane as so many other creators have turned out to be. Boundaries are healthy.

DC

Plus even if they're not bugfuck, it's just awkward having creators in fandom spaces, interacting with and implicitly approving or disapproving different types of fandom content. (Especially when they're innocently unaware of how wanky fandom can get over the stupidest shit.) No dumbass shipwar or wank over whose headcanon is the 'right' way to write a character is improved by people being able to weaponise the fact that the creator kudosed X BNF's fic so everyone with a different interpretation is wrong, or wanksplosions over the creator kudosing a fic that has been deemed Problematic for whatever reason. And like other coalies say, a creator who is themself cool but also directs ten thousand Twitter randos who don't fully get this whole fic or shipping thing to descend on the inbox of some poor incestuous noncon writer and have Very Strong Opinions about it is also less than fun.

Post your incestuous noncon under a different account then. And/or archive lock it.

I agree boundaries are healthy. You're presumably an adult. So why do you expect others (the creator of the canon, randos on Twitter) to set your boundaries for you? Set them yourself.

If it's a closed canon, or they're certain they'll never use the story (AUs, noncanon pairings) I don't see the lawsuit stuff being an issue, really? I'm shocked people think this is such a breach of etiquette -- if you don't want the creator, especially of a niche fandom, to find your shit then archive lock it. (But some of them have ao3 accounts)

Subthread OP

Thank you! As an aside, I'm surprised people are still trotting out the old "but if the creator reads your fic then you could sue them" rumor. It's never happened, it's incredibly unlikely to happen, and an author who engages with fic in namespace obviously isn't worried about it. That's their decision to make, not yours as a fic author.

Neil Gaiman just got linked all over Twitter for a Tumblr post repeating that, and brought up Babylon 5 I think.

Every publisher and agent tells screenwriters/novelists and every movie now basically has “this isn’t based on real people and any coincidences to existing stuff isn’t on purpose” but yes, it’s a rumor that both sides are better avoiding eachother. And that’s without touching a lot of East Asian fandoms struggle and need to stay under the radar due to their wild copyright law.

"If the creator reads your fic they could sue" is however something that has really happened, so I don't blame anyone for being chary. (It's happened even with authors who were known as fic-friendly.)
