Loved the story I got for Yuletide, it's long and iddy and my author clearly put a lot of effort into it but it is also objectively kind of crap with multiple spag issues and glaring canonical errors. It's massively trailing the other fic in the fandom because I'm the only one to comment and kudos and I am so worried my author will realise it's a bit shit but I liked it and I meant what I said in my comment!

I really don't get how people don't at least run a spellcheck on their stuff before they push the upload button. Even if you don't want a beta, or can't get one in time, spellcheck programs are always available. Hell, even DW puts the red crawl under any typos (and under DW, lol).

If you want to make sure they get some extra love, you can leave them another comment after author reveals saying that you were excited to learn their identity, while repeating your favorite things about the fic and how much you appreciate receiving a gift that was so well-tailored to your likes. Chances are they know they're not the best writer in the fandom, but it sounds like they genuinely set out to please you, and so a second comment from you will be worth more than ten comments from random readers.

or don't. Don't leave pity kudos that suggest there are more people who have read and enjoyed the fic. I'd be annoyed if I knew someone did this to me.

Not about pity. The time I did it, it was on the best exchange fic I'd ever received. Sadly, it was for a show nobody was watching. I thought it was grossly unfair the fic wasn't getting more attention.

I leave logged in + anon kudos all the time. It's not pity kudos, it's either "I kudosed this without remembering I was logged out, so here, bonus" kudos or "I like this twice" kudos.

I've used my socks to leave additional comments on fics for my fandoms of one that I really loved.

On works that got basically no comments, my honest response to a kudos is "you couldn't even write a short sentence that you liked it?" On works that got some comments, I barely notice kudos.

So if the reader isn't willing to leave a comment, you'd rather they didn't leave kudos, either???

I just don't care about kudos. The functionality could vanish without making any difference to me.
