Don't Stop Coal Now!

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real coal time
I feel alive
And the exchange I'll turn it inside out, yeah
I'm floating around in agony
So, (don't stop me now)
(Don't stop me)
'Cause I'm having a coal time, having a coal time~

I have a couple of theories that could be completely wrong. One is that last-minute fics are probably shorter, and shorter fics are likely to get more readers. The other is that last-minute fics probably tend to be more laser-focused on something like a single iddy trope, which can be more appealing to a wider audience than a technically better story with a well-researched plot.

I also think there might something to be said for last-minute fics being at the top of the section/relevant tag in terms of posting date. I wrote multiple treats for the same relatively big fandom, and the one I posted last is doing way better than the ones I posted earlier. I do feel like there's a kind of a snowball effect where one fic gets read first for whatever reason (short, first in the tag, whatever), starts to accumulate feedback quicker than anything else, and then people see that and are more likely to check it out because it seems disproportionately popular, so it becomes kind of self-perpetuating.
