I fully concede that I'm a sodoku novice but I spent about an hour on the first one and I couldn't solve it. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

I'm pretty rusty. It took me 40 minutes, with agonizing gaps between numbers. I wouldn't call it a beginner-level one but probably not expert-level either because I never actually guessed a number.
