Don't Stop Coal Now!

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real coal time
I feel alive
And the exchange I'll turn it inside out, yeah
I'm floating around in agony
So, (don't stop me now)
(Don't stop me)
'Cause I'm having a coal time, having a coal time~

My gift is exactly 1000 words. Not 1005 words. Not 1020 words. 1000.

Like, you really couldn't have put in less effort if you tried, huh?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Arguably you have to put more effort in to hit exactly 1000 and not go a word over!

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like it would take extra effort to do that, actually.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Absent other context, I might imagine a writer hitting 1008 and then deciding to edit down because they liked the round number.

Exactly, it's very aesthetic.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They put more effort in than you did to this wank.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably coalie from last post who had 987 words after editing until the fic was perfect and had to agonize over how to add more. You lucky sod.

But how's the writing? Polished or slapdash? I feel like that is a better metric than just word count.

+ 1 This is the question you should be asking.

There are only four fics that fit this critrea and at a glance, they all seem solid.

I bet they posted it like the day after assignments went out, too.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet they posted it at the deadline. All my shit gifts have been posted on deadline day.

Some people love round numbers. I'm not super into them, but I've definitely edited fics before when they were at like 4,014 to make them a round 4,000.

If I got a fic of exactly 1000 words, I'd probably assume it was on purpose and the writer deliberately added/deleted words to get to that number, the same way you'd add/delete to get to exactly 100 for a drabble. That doesn't prove that the fic isn't low effort, but hitting exactly 1000 words might actually have required (slightly) more effort than getting 1005.

Thanks for trying to make the wank I predicted last post happen, coalie. You brought a smile to my face.

+another 1 for exactly 1000 words being more effort than 1000+n, where n is small. If n is less than the number of words in the final sentence, that's the real sign of "did just enough".

I saw a 1001 words fic. and it looks like casefic! I haven't read it yet, will report if it's good
