I'd suggest bringing it up with the mods. It won't get you a pinch-hit, but since this mod post https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/91448.html specifically says not to use author's notes to apologize for the story or be negative about their recipient's requests, they can at least talk to the author.

Thanks, coalie. I appreciate the suggestion, but as I said in the OP, it was a back-handed shaming, not outright. And I got quite a few other REALLY AMAZING gifts as treats, so it's not like this is Ruining My Yuletide (TM) or anything. It's annoying, and it definitely got me off on the wrong foot with that fic, but the rest of my Yuletide has been amazing, so I've reached the point of just wanting to let it go and forget about it and bask in my wonderful treats. ^_^

That's valid, but I'd also lean towards telling the mods, because if their hand isn't smacked this time, then in the next exchange they might do the same to someone who isn't in as good of a place, for whom it ruins the exchange

I think it'd still be a good idea to talk to the mods, so that the author knows for the future that backhanded shaming is not acceptable in gift exchanges, especially since, as the above coalie said, their next recipient may not be fortunate enough to receive treats from other creators to make up for the backhanded shaming.

Back-handed shaming is still shaming. Bring it up with the mods. Also, you don't owe them a nice comment for shaming you, just ignore their gift and reject it.
