Don't Stop Coal Now!

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real coal time
I feel alive
And the exchange I'll turn it inside out, yeah
I'm floating around in agony
So, (don't stop me now)
(Don't stop me)
'Cause I'm having a coal time, having a coal time~

No, this is silly. The author could just as well have matched on someone who only wanted one of the characters in the first place. It shouldn't be a hardship to write that for someone who happened to request both.

There's nothing wrong with writing gen. I can easily see going "Well, I can't write A/B, but I can write A and B being friends." The idea that I'm supposed to read recip's mind and realize that it isn't acceptable to put B in unless they're romancing A ... well, not gonna happen.

Gen writers exist. (Not me, I write smut.) You aren't guaranteed a romance in Yuletide.

Well we all agree about the mind-reading part being bad. But the question here is whether it's okay to explicitly request "A/B, or just A, but not A & B."

Given that anyone who matches to an A & B request was inherently offering just-A fic, that request feels fine to me. It's really no different than if they matched to someone who only requested for A and DNW'd B, which was always a possibility if they offered A.

The difference is someone who requested only A and DNWed B is DNWing a character they never asked for, while someone who requested A & B and DNWed B unless they're shipped with A is DNWing a character they did ask for, which is inherently shitty.

Disagree. I'd call it shitty behavior if the recip requested as their only request something their author didn't offer. Otoh, it's totally fine for the recip to request a subset of their author's offers, whether in the fandom and character fields or in the optional details.

I think this depends on the phrasing of OP's request. If they said "prompts for A/B; prompts for A; thank you!" then I wouldn't get the impression that just B was a DNW, or that A-B friendship was a DNW.

If they said "prompts for A/B; prompts for A; don't write me B solo; don't write me non shippy A & B!" that would be a different kettle of fish. We'd probably still wank about it, but as someone who offered A and B, at least I would know that the only place where recip and I overlap is A solo

Part agree, but if someone requests both A and B and does not explicitly say only B is okay, than an only B fic inherently breaks the rules.

You can request but odao. And unless the author went for a spitefic like "we are like siiisters" take, or if its a ship w an antagonistic dynamic, i doubt most people who like A/B would dislike A&B

Hell, I request ships with an antagonistic dynamic, and I'd be just fine with a lot of permutations of A&B. Fic that centers on the relationship between my faves as they reluctantly cooperate/squabble intensely/obsessively try to murder each other because no one else os allowed to kill their nemesis? Yes please.

I wouldn't like friendship fluff, but I wouldn't like shippy fluff either, because that's OOC and the opposite of why I'm into the ship.

I also request antagonistic ships and this would strongly depend on the writing and the tagging for me. If it's tagged A/B I'm able to suspend disbelief and read pre-ship into it but if it was tagged A&B I'd find it harder.

Not that this is relevant to me personally because I've never received gen fic in any Yuletide. Unbetaed SPAG disaster? Yes. Placeholder fic that got replaced several hours after reveals? Unfortunately. But never anything in the vicinity of gen.

They could have, but given that they matched on A and B, and the rules state that you need to include all requested characters, it's understandable that they would feel it was "safer" to include both characters, unless OP explicitly stated that they didn't want B to appear in the fic except in the context of A/B. (And tbh I'm not sure that DNW would be enforceable with this signup; if OP really wanted A/B or A and nothing else, they should have just requested A and then emphasized in their prompts that they would love A/B).
