i really appreciate you going into your thinking on this! i think especially because this is a non-canon ship, it's a case where i requested it wanting something canon is never going to give me and just got more canon-level stuff without even a hint of more? re what you say above, i can see some cases where that might not bug me, but more for canon couples and with some extra levels to the interaction, if that makes sense.

I mean, you seem to have set up this dichotomy between "ship" and "exactly like canon" and there's a lot of stuff in between? Maybe the fic you received does feel exactly like the canon-level relationship, but I've received fic that's gen but still focuses on these two people and develops their relationship in a way canon does not. Like if I request Jessica Atriedes/Chani from Dune, they get very little canon interaction, so even a fic that focuses just on them in a & capacity and develops their gen relationship is still giving me a lot of what I want, even without any kissing or pre-slash vibes.

My point here is that I suspect other people in the thread are talking about a broader spectrum of possibilities than you seem to be.

Or as another kind of example: even though my OTP are the two leads of the movie and therefore get lots of canon interaction, they don't get hurt/comfort interactions. I emphasize I love hurt/comfort for them. While my ideal fic for them would be a purposefully shippy hurt/comfort, gen h/c would also be giving me something I wanted that canon didn't provide.

I have generally found that even people who give me gen instead of my ships for Yuletide do try to provide something from my likes or prompts that make it clear they were trying to give me something I would like (and generally, they succeed!).

My recip's ship was also non-canon, but they were canonically close and very important to each other, which I did reflect. I don't know if that changes anything?
