my recipient only requested a single character, and very clearly only wants gen fic about them, which is fine, but her only prompts are stuff like "i just want him to be happy" and other similar stuff, with one mention of him making more friends.

i'm just kind of stumped on a starting point because at least with ship fic there's a natural core to build a story around, and every time i've gotten a gen request before there's usually been at least one narrative prompt i could work from, but idk what to do here

Are there particular canon reasons they're unhappy? Fixit one of them.

Is it kind of unfixable? Write them an h/c fic for a canon hurt/canon in general hurting, just leave out the romance part.

Alternatively: give them kittens

Give him a hobby! Or, what are his strengths/skills and what's a plot in which one of those strengths could save the day?

Make him do something canon-related that leads him to meeting a new friend/getting closer to someone in canon. Friendship fic is like ship fic without the romance!
