what's the history with b_o? I'm a newbie on the discord and she seems pretty active/helpful?

DC My interactions with her have been mostly positive, but she tends to be a little...opinionated.

She's very pushy and opinionated.

She also (infamously) once wrote a story for a recip who had requested m/m, and Beatrice wrote m/canon wife, with the wife running over the other half of the m/m ship with a car.

Woah. I missed this entirely. I'm going to assume it was rejected. Did the recipient get an EPH?

No, that was one where the mods (notably morbane but she wasn't an officially mod then) sided with b_o (as they always do with wanky authors) and chastised the recip.

how the fuck did that not get an EPH? and they CHASTISED the recip? what did the recip say

the mods always chastise the recips lol why do you think people dislike yuletide mods? they made a PSA over ff_d's spitefic but nothing over actual DNW hitting instances like the vegan getting bloody dewclaws meateating

And even when she's being helpful she does it in such a lecture-like tone that I (and others) find annoying and patronizing.

Oh and there was that one time on Discord when she said it was basically OK to delete your fic. And the mods were like O_o

Context: user Ea_Nasir was asking if it's socially acceptable to leave your work anonymous after the end of an exchange. Various people confirmed that, then:

Beatrice_Otter — Today at 8:43 PM And, like, after the exchange is over? If you want to delete the story entirely? You can. They will have had time to read it and save a copy if they so desire.

Rosencrantz — Today at 8:43 PM no no. that's an unwritten rule it's a gift for the recipient you can face serious penalties in some exchanges for deleting the story

Beatrice_Otter — Today at 8:45 PM I'm not saying it's great, but it is possible. And it was one of the big changes from the old Yuletide archive to AO3. On the old archive, once you posted it, it was out of your control because it was a gift. In the new archive, it is always under your control.

Rosencrantz — Today at 8:46 PM Ea-nasir, please do not delete your story. And that is terrible advice, Beatrice. It's against the social graces of exchange culture it will just get people into trouble. Orphan fics you want nothing to do with or leave them on anon

Morbane — Today at 8:47 PM I can see it being reassuring to know you have that nuclear option, but it really is a nuclear option.

I suggest ea_nasir replace the story with a photo of some mediocre copper ingots and see what happens

Last I checked she was literally a preacher as her dayjob. And she clearly doesn't know how to turn it off when dealing with people outside of church.

That clarifies the spitefic she wrote as homophobia pure and simple then.

She's written m/m and f/f too, if we're judging whether people are homophobic based on what they write.

Dude she's pastor in a liberal mainline church. And personally queer. As many Christian clergy are. There are plenty of ways to be an annoying god-botherer without being homophobic.

DC Okay, that was very much an ODAO fic, I'm guessing. Technically includes all of the characters, but if I was the recipient and wanted ship fic, that for sure would make me really angry and upset. Also had a smug air of "Look at me, writing these characters the way they SHOULD be."

And she is a hippo, so if you block her, you'll be blocking a lot of hippo requests. And if you use a different hippo for your own request, but you have to wait until later for someone to answer, they may go to her and you'll miss the info. It's a whole mess.

She has no concept of how conversational turn-taking works, although I guess most people on the yuletide discord are the same.
