What's your most memorable canon review/pickup story? Did you do some insane research? Binge-watch a TV show? Did something funny come up? Tell coal!

Popular musicals from the 1880s. It wound up being one line in casual conversation. Like all of my research, hours to make sure I'm being accurate, actual usage in fic probably so minuscule and offhand that I could have just as well left it out.

Same thing always happens to me, but I'm pretty sure if I *didn't* do all the research that never makes it into the fic, the fic somehow wouldn't come out as well.

Watched a song video on Youtube for a recip's request and then got into a whole bunch of other songs by the same band. A few hours later I shared my recip's love for that band. That was fun!

Got a fairly niche comic fandom that my (really excellent) metro library had nothing on, but I happen to work at a university with one of the largest comics libraries in the country. In order to read the comics, I had to apply for membership to the library, wherein I had to explain why I needed access. I think I wrote something like "writing an article for a comics tribute". I know I did not write "I need to write some fanfiction." Anyway, I went every day on my lunch break for two weeks. Had to sit in their reading room, request them to bring the specific volumes, no pens allowed, only pencils for notetaking. It was totally worth it. I did fic *and* art that year and my recip was over the moon. Very few comments, but that's what you get for niche fandoms. :)

Yeah, I was a fan back in high school, but I didn't have any copies of them anymore (I never had; I got them from a girl I was dating). Anyway, it was great to get to revisit them, they'd been a huge inspiration to me.

One time I wrote Peter Pan fic. I read the canon in English for the first time (I'm esl), combed it for small details and did a shitton of historical research. It really changed and expanded the way I see the story and characters and the resulting fic is probably the best thing I've ever written, including non fiction. (It's also my most popular fic by far)

hell that time i wanted to write strictly canon fic for a fkin unfinished, contradictory, multimedia, multiauthor time loop story. trying to make sense of it almost made me cry and the resulting fic was pretentious af and flopped ._.
