hits/kudos/bookmarks

Do you care about hits/kudos/bookmarks on Yuletide fics (as long as the recip likes it)? Do you measure them by a different standard than other non-exchange fics you post?

Not really. I know it's not modest to say but the rare times I'm not writing for a fandom of one, my fic usually "wins" in terms of stats vs the other fics which I guess is nice but I mainly care about the recip's reception. In terms of fics in general, I do believe in the hits/kudos ratio but when I sort for things to read I rank by bookmarks.

what hit/kudos ratio do you aim for for non yuletide/exchange fics?

7-15% in my expirence are usually solid fics that I enjoy. Less than that (that isn't porn) usually has Wattpad style writing that I don't like (not a value judgment, just not to my taste) and then more than that is usually Lowest Common Denominator fic (OOC to me, long previous WIPS that focus more on tropes than characterization to me) that isn't to my personal taste.

Da: in most fandoms, 10-15% is good, 15-20% is great, 25%+ (unless it has almost no hits) something weird is going on. If it's weird porn, or there's something controversial about it, or it has less than 20 hits, I ignore ratio entirely.

The older the fic, the lower the ratio - a month old fic with 20%, a year old fic with 15%, and a five year old fic with 10% are probably doing equally well.

Yep, YT fics are different. Of course, I'd love for it to be hugely popular (who wouldn't?) but in reality if the recipient is happy then I'm satisfied.

Some of the really rare fandom fic I've done still gets the odd hit and kudos/comment every once in while.

If I cared about this for my main assignments I would go insane. I write consistently niche things that would be lucky to get more than two eyeballs on it, so I only offer for people who are clearly wildly passionate about their tiny niche thing and as long as I get a comment from them I'm happy - 100% of the time the comment has been EXTREMELY enthusiastic. I've gone back looking at the stats and not been able to believe I only have like 10 kudos on it 3 years later because it FELT and still feels so good.

I will usually pad that out with treats in Yuletide popular fandoms because I'm human and like to get some activity in my inbox for Christmas. A present to myself on top of a treat for the recips! Everyone wins and I don't obsess about the assignment's reception.

I care obsessively about ratios and how my fic is doing compared to others in the fandom (if relevant), straight numbers are meaningless in yt.

Until at least March you can't directly compare that year's yt to other stuff even on ratio, but after six months or so it smooths out. (that said I expect gen or rarepair written to prompt to do less well overall, and don't care.)

I don't pay attention to my ratio and I've written for fandoms where I felt stoked to get five kudos and others where I'm about to reach 3k kudos on a fic.

I do sort by kudos automatically when I seek out fic in a new fandom but in a lot of bigger fandoms the sweet spot is fics with a higher number of kudos but not the most kudosed fics.

Well, my #1 and #3 fics by kudos are both Yuletide fics (for a fandom that no longer qualifies), and my #2-6 fics by comment threads are all Yuletide fics (#1 is the only fic I posted as a WIP). So it's more that I probably shouldn't measure my other fics by Yuletide standards!

I don't care about hits/kudos/bookmarks at all so I guess I measure them all by the same standard.

I secretly yearn to be the most kudos'd fic in my fandom for yuletide.

Hah, I am frequently the writer of the most kudos'd fic in my fandom for Yuletide. Which is also the least kudos'd fic in my fandom for Yuletide.

+1 This may be the first year I'll be writing something that someone else might also be writing.

Re: hits/kudos/bookmarks

(Anonymous) 2021-11-04 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I care? Yes. Do I obsess over it? Not really. I also tend to get rare even for yuletide fandoms as assignments, so I know that I'll get few eyeballs on it (especially when it's been the first fic in that fandom, so the tag isn't even wrangled in time for yuletide). Several of my assignments have been explicit gen or character request studies, so I also assume that not very many people will check those out.

That being said, 80% of the stories that I write are in small fandoms or are original fic for other challenges, so I don't really ever get a lot of viewership for my stories.

Whether the recip likes it or not is my main priority. I couldn't care less about stats.

I'm not that pressed about stats for any of my fics, tbh, so yes, my only real metric of success in exchanges is my recipient liking it. I definitely expect less interaction overall, but my proportions of feedback are usually vaguely the same.

I hope for a 10 to 1 ratio of hits:comments+kudos+bookmarks

For the super-rare canons that only the recip will read, I know what I'm getting into and don't worry about it beyond being THRILLED when in future years someone drops a kudos or comment on that fic.

I don't post non exchange fic and yes, I do my hits/kudos ratio regularly. i just want people to care for what i make, ive been posting stuff for 15 years and no one does...

SA of course this doesn't count for the really obscure fandoms, those have few readers by default

I like to read the notes that some people add to public bookmarks of my fics, when they serve as recs or mini comments. So yes, I do check them out.
