hot takes ao3 edition

What's your hot take on anything related to AO3? Mine is that I love when people talk to themselves in the tags like it's tumblr. It's funny and I don't think it hurts anyone. People who get their backs up about it are sticklers.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

+1 especially because it's so easy to hide them with a script or whatever. Unless they are using tags to troll, it's all good!

Yup. rages against the rant I just saw telling people to not use AO3 tags like it's tumblr

it's not that easy to hide with a script on phones, though, which is my primary way of reading ao3. i can hide all tags easily, which i do for scrolling reasons, but if i expand them to see what content is tagged, i get pissed off if i have to read someone's soliloquy, too.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The hide the with a script advice is always touted as a solution, but it doesn't really help. Most people want to be able to see functional and informative tags, so hiding them all isn't helpful.

It'd be easier if people who liked the chatty tumblr style tags had some sort of system where important info tags went first, then the chatty tags after. But you often get lengthy blocks of tags like first fic in the fandom, character's a plus parenting, self harm, the author regrets nothing, i don't know where this is going, lots of feels, graphic depictions of cutting, character's a precious cinnamon roll protect at all costs, characters being angsty as fuck, sexual abuse, sad character, but don't worry he'll get better, etc etc. only much longer, though the new limits have helped cut that down a bit. But the useful stuff that people might want to filter on is buried in the middle of the waffle.

A better solution, though I doubt it'd ever happen would be to have two fields, one for site wide filterable tags, and one just for the author's tag chatter

We have that already, it's called "author's notes"

My hot take is that non-english fandoms should have translated or transliterated titles in English characters, and be in their original titles in their original alphabet when browsing in that language, instead of this revolting pipe business that makes non-english fandom names into horrendous eyesores. And that transliterations to English should not include diacritics, which make it impossible to search within said fandom from a standard English keyboard.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
+1, especially for the diacritics part. I feel so bad for those fandoms.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was originally planned, but they just never got around to having the archive in multiple languages.

+1 about the diacritics, those are terrible.

I sympathize with the problem of translating/transliterating everything into English, though, because some Asian films (for example) have three or four different official English titles. It would be great if all those titles could be synned, but I think it would be complicated to make that happen.

I don't know anything about coding, but the current wrangling time for tags seems crazy to me. Could new tags not be automated and then walked back if needed by a human?

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no automation at all for AO3 wrangling. It's all human based and it would take a complete rewriting of the entire meta/tag structure to facilitate that.

More people signing up to become wranglers is the main way to handle that. I think there's like maybe less than 200 active wranglers at any given time. Some fandoms get like 1k tags a month. Wranglers get to choose what fandom they work on so usually for small fandoms a mod will wrangle it right when it's first created and then it isn't touched again unless someone submits a ticket or someone new joins the wrangling team and picks it up as a passion project.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of tags are you talking about?

Tags in active fandoms generally wrangle fast.
Tags in unwatched fandoms can take awhile, but those are usually small enough it's not really needed.
New fandom tags are pretty fast unless they're tricky, and automation wouldn't solve tricky cases.

Non-fandom tags are never because we don't have a set of guidelines for them and nobody can agree on how to make more. That's also not solvable by automation.

(Basically, people power is not the bottleneck here, we have to turn volunteers away, it's project management.)

I don't mind, like, three chatty tumblr tags. After that and it nearly always tips over to "scroll on by"-ville. So, am I going to give you shit directly? No. Am I going to read your fic? Also no. Tumblr still exists! You can promote your fic on tumblr with all of those tags! No one's stopping you.

But the coalies in coaltide, the tall and the small,
Were talking without any yule wank at all!

And the Coalie, their coal feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. "How could it be so?

It came without discourse! It came without trolls!
It came without sockpuppets, Nazis, or coal!"

They puzzled and puzzled till their puzzler was sore.
Then the Coalie thought something they hadn't before.

Maybe Yuletide, they thought, with their comment form blank,
Maybe Yuletide, perhaps, is about more than wank!

And what happened then? Well, in Coaltide they say
That the Coalie's small heart grew three sizes that day!

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

It needs a "main pairing" and "main characters" field. 3 tags allowed on each.
