Lol, Renault fandom?

I have written for the requester of #23 in other exchanges! They are a delightful person who leaves great comments and isn't nearly as scary to write for as those DNWs make them sound!

They seem like a perfectly fine recipient from their letter tbh. I’m assuming that the Balkans thing has a very specific story behind it lol

I mean I suspect it's just an oddly-phrased "no issuefic" tbh.

They also deserve a better Yuletide than the one they got in 2018, when their author uploaded an incomplete fic that was clearly supposed to be a Great Epic:

It is long, but it stopped at 3/5 chapters in April 2019 and hasn't been updated since.

Damn. When did the rule that fics had to be complete start?

I suspect what happened is that the author marked it complete at first, and the first chapter was long and detailed enough that mods didn't catch it on checking.

I disagree. One year I was writing a YT fic about a character whose Jewish faith was very important to her. I'm not Jewish, and while the canon had a few interesting tidbits, she wasn't the main character. I did my best to research, wrote my fic, and asked someone who was Jewish to beta. Not only was my beta able to find two things that didn't ring true, but she also found a few other points where the character's actions could be tied more clearly to her faith and upbringing, in ways that brought the fic to a whole new level.

If I had signed up to write for, for example, Reservation Dogs this year, I would definitely look for a sensitivity beta.

And I don't see another gift for them that year, so they must have let their writer get away with it.

They make sure the fic is marked 1/1 (or however many chapters) and not #/? and that the ending of the fic is a complete sentence and not copypasta or [insert scene] or a sentence fragment.

that it's complete and over 1,000 words and has your fandom in it.

I think depending on how much capacity they have, year to year, they also check that all the characters appear, that it isn't a placeholder non-story disguised as a story and actually ends, and that it doesn't violate any obvious DNWs.

How long do you think your assignment will be? Bets on the word count of the longest fic? Average word count?

We are going to be popping the BIGGEST bottles when it gets claimed.

I have a feeling mine's going to be in the 6k-8k range, but my assignments always end up getting a little out of hand so I'm fully prepared for that to be longer.

I'll put my bet for the longest fic on a solid, like. 50k work.

Basically just that everyone has a story that is 1000 words or more, is actually a story and not just copy-pasted wikipedia or the word "pickle" repeated 1000 times, isn't one of the opt-in-only formats, and isn't obviously incomplete or full of stuff like "~~write next scene here~~" or beta readers' notes.

They're pretty loose about about "incomplete" though, as long as you don't mark it 1/? or leave in obvious placeholder text or put in an author note apologizing for not finishing they aren't going to make a ruling over whether that was a satisfying ending or not.

If there's a blatant DNW violation or wrong-characters kind of thing, they might catch it, but I don't think they check that very hard, that's the kind of thing that's more likely to go out as an EPH after the collection opens. Recip in this case could probably have put in for an EPH because once you read the story it's obvious from the author's not that it's incomplete, but they must have decided it wasn't worth making waves.

It might not increase the number of gifts for last pinch hits (would anything?), but it could up the quality. I tend to write treats and then put them to the side until after the deadline. I've had fics written as treats become post-deadline pinch hits.

This isn't to say that there aren't good PHs whipped up in a few hours after deadline, but there are definitely some late fills that are less polished or less tailored to the recip. Given the time constraints, that's not surprising.
