Re: Hot take time: are socks bad?

Something that I think needs to be remembered is that socks provide a service beyond getting that person another gift. There are many instances in small fandom exchanges I've run and socked up where my sock ended up being the only recipient for a participant. That person would have had to drop out if my sock hadn't been there, and who knows what that would do for their assigned writer if they were also in the near-unmatchable boat.

If socks are asking for the same 3 fandoms across 9 accounts that's something different but IME most socks are the Pear Tree challenge asking for different fandoms each time. Others want and are able to sign up because they see somebody is requesting their fandom that nobody else requested.

You just go ahead and post to [community profile] yuletide

Just needs a cute title. "Yule Be First"?

Then some copy and paste format, usually username and letter link, list of fandom(s)/characters. I suggest also adding a field for "how to find" since presumably some of these fandoms are obscure.

Socks are great! They provide extra nomination slots for me, so I can assure that more than three fandoms of my dreams are available to request. They write extra fics so no one feels weird about attaching out there porn to their main or writing 25 treats for one exchange. Sock rings where everyone drops out instead of providing suck, but that's usually just one idiot who would find a way to be an idiot with only a single account.

"Yule Be First" - I love that!!

I have socks, I have had them for years, and I've never had a problem. I write a LOT.

Last year, for example, I signed up with 3 accounts. I wrote my 3 assignments, 1 PH, and 15 treats, for a grand total of 19 fics.

I don't feel bad about socking up and getting a couple extra gifts when I write this much. :)

I do have a personal rule that I must do my very best to write at least twice as many fics as accounts I'm using. It's never been an issue to reach that, as exchange people always have awesome prompts. <3

you're a gold toe sock! <333

(Coalie from below you)

They write extra fics so no one feels weird about attaching out there porn to their main or writing 25 treats for one exchange.

These are definitely elements in my dentistry choices! I don't want to become known as "Misura Jr" because I write a ton of fic. If I split my output across personas, it just looks like 3 very active people instead of 1 EXTREMELY active person that draws too much attention for my taste.

And also if I have a weird porn desire I can ask for it or write for it without feeling like I'm oversharing by having it on my main.

That’s not a “service” specific to socks, though. It’s just part of signing up like anyone else. And if a sock does actually put in the effort to participate like anyone else, then sure, I don’t think most mods care.

Cyrt

That’s a great title! Honestly though I’m too lazy and shy to ever make up a mini challenge and figure out all those details, but if someone else here wants to do it, it’d be much appreciated!

I'm not willing to bust the filament-thin bubble of plausible deniability I have about being on coal (I don't know why, it's stupid honestly), but maybe coadie or yulebegay will graciously provide their challenge posting services...

You're not supposed to have two spaces at the end of each sentence? Since when? Honestly befuddled coalie.

I'd be willing to do it when I get off of work if no one does it before then.

Does anyone want to compile a list of fandoms that qualify?

+1.

If an exchange doesn't allow socks, I say that signing up with socks shouldn't be done, but not like the worst exchange sin ever. The main motivation of socks is getting more gifts and to me that just kind of seems the equivalent of showing up to a white elephant exchange and bringing multiple gifts and expecting to be able to pick multiple gifts in return. Sure , it's equivalent but there's something off about that to me. If you want to write several fics, there's nothing stopping you.

you're awesome, yulebegay coalie!

wouldn't it be easier/faster to make it so people can comment if they've requested a 0-fic fandom?

Re: your ideal gifts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks yulebegay! Yeah I think it probably works (and is less work for you) if people can just comment if they've requested a 0-fic fandom

>The main motivation of socks is getting more gifts

Uh, not for a lot of people with socks, including multiple in this thread.

In fact for most people signing up with only 1-2 socks I'm gonna bet that getting more gifts ranks low on the list of motivations, below "sequestering fandom identities" etc. For people with 4+ socks gift acquisition seems more likely to be the motive.

This is my dilemma with the lyrics thing. Do I want to title my fic with lyrics from the rickroll song? Yes. Do I want to give away that I'm on coal? Not really.

Are we including fandoms synned with original works? Are we including other-media type 5 minute fandoms? Just leaving that up to commenter discretion, maybe?

use a (well-behaved) sock!

hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your hot take on anything related to AO3? Mine is that I love when people talk to themselves in the tags like it's tumblr. It's funny and I don't think it hurts anyone. People who get their backs up about it are sticklers.

Re: your ideal gifts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd just say "0-fic fandom" and leave it to people's discretion!

Re: your ideal gifts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say to not complicate it and leave it up to commenter discretion, but honestly whatever the person who makes the post wants to do is fine

+1 especially because it's so easy to hide them with a script or whatever. Unless they are using tags to troll, it's all good!
