The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

On one hand I think that if a fanfic has a big enough recursive fandom to support an exchange scene based off of it and it alone, and is very clearly different from the source canon, then it's at least as valid as the "What if" stuff.

On the other hand if that was my introduction to recursive fandoms I sure as heck would not think it was even remotely valid. That has to be the worst evidence post for that sort of thing I've ever seen. They don't even name the actual fandom, wtf.

Sheesh. If I hadn’t used up all my nomination slots I might’ve actually tried arguing for Naruto ending AUs to get into Yuletide.

as someone who has never watched Supernatural, I'd nominate Down to Agincourt...

I'm in the fandom, but yeah, no way. It still has enough ties to original HP canon like characters in common - OOC!genderswapped!Harry aside, there are canon characters like Snape, Draco, Lupin, Sirius - they may be written/portrayed differently but it's recognizably them. Snape is still a potions professor who had a falling out with Lily and is ostenibly sided with the bad guys (politicians rather than Death Eaters); Lupin is still a werewolf and Marauder friend of Potters & Sirius. The fic author draws on HP world/magic/plot elements even if she creates her own things herself. It might be different than canon, but it's far from some eligible isolated standalone work.

Felt like I was going insane trying to make sense of that, and then I realised they don't know what "indistinguishable" means.

Someone needs to rely to all these stupid noms with the exchange these people should be participating in rather than Yuletide? You want to write fic based off a fanwork as if that’s its own canon? [community profile] recursiveexchange is for you

They don't even need to wait for that one. This fanfic has several exchanges *just* for it as a fandom (as in, the fanfic, not HP, the specific fanfic) and shows up as a fandom in a lot of multifandom exchanges.

genuine question, sparked from reading through this evidence - ignoring personal feelings towards the writing/philosophy/politics of it all, do you think Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (lesswrong) would be eligible for Yuletide? It certainly feels like enough of its own thing to make it in, but at the same time it really does feel like it's skirting the edge of eligibility

Didn't it get in at least once? I feel like it did.

I've read a fair chunk of HPMOR, and I would say no. Even if it's different, there's still significant overlap. I simply don't think most fan-created works are their own works to be eligible. I feel differently about official megafandom spinoffs and that's probably because of that pro/fan bias, but eh.

Definitely not. The setting is identical to HP canon, the plot is very similar, the characters are nearly identical.

Yes, Harry Potter is a child genius and Voldemort is more nuanced. There is some interesting world-building around magic that was not in the original canon. But none of that makes it a new fandom.

Same as the SG-1 AU that posited, ‘What if all these scientists, military and diplomats were actually good at their jobs?’ Excellent AU, not a new canon.

What fic is that SG1 one? I want to read that.

No. Not even slightly.
