I was curious about how many people might actually benefit from matching options like worldbuilding, so I checked last year's app, and 998 out of 6073 requests had no characters - that's about about 16%, so not a huge majority or anything, but significant (especially if you consider that a lot of people probably think you have to request characters, or have to request them just so they can DNW one.)

(216 of the no-characters requests were also no-optional details; there were 24 no-characters-no-details-no-letters)

Meanwhile there were 476 that used the word "worldbuilding" or a variation, of which 389 also requested characters, so almost 90% of those no-characters requests aren't requesting worldbuilding, at least by name.

Cool stats!

I requested worldbuilding and a character only because there were several characters in the tagset (nominated by someone other than me - I nominated without characters) and I didn't want to ask for no characters (any) and get one particular character I dislike.

I am really excited about asking for worldbuilding in this fandom this year, because in truth I don't want any of the canon characters. I did receive a nice fic with the character I requested, but I would rather not have had a that-character-centric fic.

Yeah, I think there's a lot of that! I've also requested a single character even though I didn't particularly care if I got that character because canon is huge and I wanted something from the part of canon that character was in, so I didn't want to match with someone who only wanted to write a character from, say, 5000 years ago on a different planet.

I tend to request "Any" wanting any nominated character, not world building, so I just didn't request any fandoms with worldbuilding nominated. Not a problem, I always want more fandoms than I can request.
