The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

Want gifts for. There's no way of predicting what other people are going to request and no point in wasting effort trying to guide them to what I want to write.

I largely c+p my signups from various other signups I've done over the past few years. Usually there's a few small things that I want to change, or I add in a new fandom, or take out a fandom. I think that most people are looking at your signup for the first time or really only looking at one specific fandom when they look at your sign up (because that's what I usually do haha).

I think you might be mistaking requests for nominations.

Agree about Ted Lasso being big. Depending on how the new season of Succession goes, I could see it blowing up too - feels like there's a lot more media hype around it.

Worldbuilding is go!

I am wondering how people are going to use this, and vacillating on whether to nom it or not.

I was thinking that if it went through, I would use it to request things like "what happened during the canon timeskip?" or "a story from when everybody was at boarding school" or "any canon character and their relationship to religion" - the sort of things I might have either put on an Any request, or might have nominated a specific character from that part of canon just to use as a signifier rather than wanting only that particular character.

But I am already seeing people treating "worldbuilding" as if it means "OC fic". What do you think, coalies, if I request "Worldbuilding" am I tanking my chances of getting "anything set at Hogwarts during the period between Grindlewald and Voldemore that engages with changes in Muggle society" instead of "My OC is a Ravenclaw"? Am I misusing "worldbuilding" if I say I only want things involving (any) canon characters? Are people going to expect to only get requests for encyclopedia articles about grain tariffs? Is there some other interpretation of "worldbuilding" that's going to trip me up?

If I want "worldbuilding that expands on this part of canon" is it still safer to request worldbuilding + a character from that part of canon or can I go with just "worldbuilding"?

And if I offer "Worldbuilding" what kind of prompts do you think I can expect to get?

I assume they mean the people who just blantantly listed six noms each.

is your butt a fandom or a character

Literally nobody is doing this, tho? Every single instance of a comment with more than three fandoms listed, it's at most three nominations, plus one or more requests. They're using the post exactly as intended!

I'm planning to request Worldbuilding for a fandom with 0 fics, where the main character isn't very interesting and is likely dying by the end of the story. The only named character who likely survives there's almost nothing known about. So I'm going to ask for Worldbuilding about either OCs or that named character (who's essentially an OC).

But in Worldbuilding-Ex, I've written worldbuilding about a character from the canon, largely expanding upon her backstory.

Tell England! Part school story, part WW1 story, both parts equally gay. You're welcome!

I am a huge fan of Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It’s technically fantasy and there are some minor magical elements but it’s really more about this European-ish nation that gets into such extensive warfare in a vaguely mid-1800s time period that women (including the main character) are drafted. I think it’s so well written and has interesting character development.

The Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas is set in Victorian England and is a gender flipped Sherlock series (shocking, I know). There’s super slow burn romance and lots of mystery solving.

The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner is a historical fantasy series set in something like Turkey/Anatolia of the classical antiquity era. The main character is largely male but there are a good amount of very interesting female characters. Plenty of adventure.

Circe by Madeline Miller is a retelling of the legend of Circe (of The Odyssey fame). I really like Madeline Miller’s writing.

The Saint of Steel series by T. Kingfisher is a fantastic fantasy series! I love T. Kingfisher and this series does not disappoint—-I love the female characters in both books! Lots of adventure.

Shiny new (to you) Yuletide fandoms

What brand new small fandoms are you planning to nominate or request, or do you hope to write?

Regular spreadsheet coalie (and nonnie) popping in to say that I can't do the spreadsheet this year due to IRL stuff.

Hopefully the one on the comm works, but it looks like it's just grabbing from people who report there, not on FFA and Coal, so there will be missing bits.

It's also not created so it's one line of the fandom and then straight across character noms. Which yes, you can look at all of them on the alphabetized sheet, but it's easy to miss things that way. *is opinionated about what's easiest to read*

Lol, coalie, perfect is the enemy of good. But good luck with your IRL things and thanks for past work!

I have one fandom I want for sure, but I’m having trouble thinking of other ones I’d want as much :(

You can put the first one in now and add the other two near the end of nominations!
