If you request two characters that are together canonically, is it bad form for all of your requests to touch on their couple-ness?

No.

I didn't nominate Prey 2017 because it seems to have such a decent sized presence in other exchanges that I just filed it off as too big in my mind. It's one of those fandoms that if I request it I know I have a decent chance of getting it.

I just checked and it has 187 works on AO3 and 32 on FF.net (including crossovers) before any filtering is done. Once I filter it's down to 75 total.

I can't decide if I'm mad at myself for not checking earlier and nominating it. I probably wouldn't have requested it? But I definitely would have written it if someone else did.

Provost's Dog - Tamora Pierce: A book trilogy with 2 m/f pairings (the second one only really happens in the 3rd book), and one background m/m (1 is trans/genderqueer) pairing in the second book. Plus lots of action and adventure

When you say "scrape" does that mean that the app automatically checks for number of fics and wordcount? Meaning that we spreadsheet coalies needn't do it by hand in the future?

Yeppers; I certainly don't hand-count this stuff, haha! Given a collection ID, the scraper just loops through all the works and puts stuff together.

I haven't put it into the autoapp, but thinking about it there's no reason why I couldn't put it into the autoapp if people wanted me to. The caveat there being that it would only be for non-logged in public works. Worth doing?

Not exclusively. I'd imagine it could be anything like a prompt for post-canon fic with any of the nominated characters or characters D, E, and F are all off-screen during the climactic battle but come upon the carnage, write any of their POVs to the devastation. Basically any sort of broad scenario that could be fulfilled with any character.

I’m getting an error message for this, as follows:

Why am I seeing this?

There are a few potential reasons:

You haven't deployed an app yet.
You may have deployed an empty directory.
This is a custom domain, but we haven't finished setting it up yet.

I was curious about how many people might actually benefit from matching options like worldbuilding, so I checked last year's app, and 998 out of 6073 requests had no characters - that's about about 16%, so not a huge majority or anything, but significant (especially if you consider that a lot of people probably think you have to request characters, or have to request them just so they can DNW one.)

(216 of the no-characters requests were also no-optional details; there were 24 no-characters-no-details-no-letters)

Meanwhile there were 476 that used the word "worldbuilding" or a variation, of which 389 also requested characters, so almost 90% of those no-characters requests aren't requesting worldbuilding, at least by name.

-"I'd love anything about any character in this fandom, here are some scattershot ideas but go wild"
-"I would love this, this, or this AU, or something set during this time in canon"
-"I'm interested in how this plot thing that happened would have affected any of the characters, pick your fave"
-"I'd love anything using this trope/theme"

There's 800+ examples in last year's app, there's many ways of doing it!

pulled from my planned requests this year:

- canon left this plot thread dangling, please yank on it?
- there's a whole bunch of minor characters that are important to the MCs that are mentioned for a few hundred words each in the flashback sequence, I'd love anything about one of them and their relationship to their relevant MC
- I'd love something that looks at this five-minute fandom from a meta perspective
- OC or minor canon character's viewpoint on any of the MCs while X was happening to them
- this canon is very definitely always X genre by a strict formula, what if you took a canon-style story and went outside the formula or switched genre?
- If you connect this dot and this dot, there are interesting implications for why that other thing happened, so what if?
- This fandom is always so tragic, please make something happy happen/this fandom is never serious, but what if it was for once?

Like some of that could be interpreted as "worldbuilding" at a stretch, but at that point so would most character requests.

I requested worldbuilding and a character only because there were several characters in the tagset (nominated by someone other than me - I nominated without characters) and I didn't want to ask for no characters (any) and get one particular character I dislike.

I am really excited about asking for worldbuilding in this fandom this year, because in truth I don't want any of the canon characters. I did receive a nice fic with the character I requested, but I would rather not have had a that-character-centric fic.

Yeah, I think there's a lot of that! I've also requested a single character even though I didn't particularly care if I got that character because canon is huge and I wanted something from the part of canon that character was in, so I didn't want to match with someone who only wanted to write a character from, say, 5000 years ago on a different planet.

Nope. You are not guaranteed to get fic focused on them as a couple, but it's not bad form to request it.

I think if what you're requesting is More Of [Canon], it's fine not to give an out. If they weren't okay with the canon dynamic they shouldn't have offered the characters.
