The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

ayrt

But some people like getting negative attention/being infamous vs famous. Or they don’t care (ff-d) and spitefic is the same as well meaning meh-fic. If having a bad rep is low stress to them, what is the functional difference to them and a neutral participant?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Six hours to nominate!

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Is the negative attention really the point then, they're just doing it to make people wank at them? But then why do some of them put so much attention into secrecy? socktopus clearly wasn't chasing infamy, at least at first.

The difference between them and the neutral participant is that the neutral participant isn't putting a huge amount of time and effort in. It's an effort/reward thing. Putting in a total of maybe two hours to sign up and write a mediocre fic and then get a mediocre fic and then go on with your life - good ratio of effort to reward.

Putting in dozens of hours to manage multiple identities and get your timings and offers exactly right or whatever, just in order to get a mediocre fic - not good ratio of effort to reward, especially when the 'toss off a mediocre fic in an hour' strategy is also an option for the same reward.

I guess there are people for whom the scheming is its own reward, the same way obsessing over coal and my assignment for weeks is its own reward for me?

I feel like I should have more fandoms that I want to nom, but I can’t remember!

Lol same.

On one hand I think that if a fanfic has a big enough recursive fandom to support an exchange scene based off of it and it alone, and is very clearly different from the source canon, then it's at least as valid as the "What if" stuff.

On the other hand if that was my introduction to recursive fandoms I sure as heck would not think it was even remotely valid. That has to be the worst evidence post for that sort of thing I've ever seen. They don't even name the actual fandom, wtf.

Nicki Minaj's Cousin's Friend's Swollen Testicles (Myths & Legends)

Nah jk, but the nomination period is prime time for some of my worst dipshit ideas and I cannot wait for noms to close lmao. Got that T-Rex vision where any ol' bullshit twitter pushes into my line of sight just gets chased down, jumped on, snapped up, and turned over looking for Yuletide potential. I try to reign myself in, but I've been in lockdown for so long now that the boredom has burned a hole in my resolve.

Catch me nominating The Pervasive Malaise of Lockdown (Anthropomorphic) and requesting some wildly under-negotiated kink because, can confirm, that grim bitch has been fuckin hard every day.

+1 yuuup. I got 3 mins into the first episode and let the overwhelming disappointment just wash away all interest I had in the series.

Also the FF wiki link is either wrong or the wiki has been taken down.

Sheesh. If I hadn’t used up all my nomination slots I might’ve actually tried arguing for Naruto ending AUs to get into Yuletide.

as someone who has never watched Supernatural, I'd nominate Down to Agincourt...

I'm in the fandom, but yeah, no way. It still has enough ties to original HP canon like characters in common - OOC!genderswapped!Harry aside, there are canon characters like Snape, Draco, Lupin, Sirius - they may be written/portrayed differently but it's recognizably them. Snape is still a potions professor who had a falling out with Lily and is ostenibly sided with the bad guys (politicians rather than Death Eaters); Lupin is still a werewolf and Marauder friend of Potters & Sirius. The fic author draws on HP world/magic/plot elements even if she creates her own things herself. It might be different than canon, but it's far from some eligible isolated standalone work.

Oh no! I loved Vol 1 of the manga so much. Hmm, maybe I'll just keep consuming the manga and blithely ignore the anime. xD

There's no way you haven't seen Mononoke, but... holy shit Mononoke. Edo period-ish and then a time skip to 1920-ish. Synopsis: a travelling medicine seller investigates and banishes spirits. Vibes: like an acid trip through kabuki hell. I'm rewatching it for the first time in ages and goddamn it's still a masterpiece of art horror, 100% gorgeous 100% grisly. Absolute miracle that something as fresh and sharp as this was produced during the moe boom era. (3 + 12 episodes)

The Photo Studio is a wonderful animated short about a girl getting her photo taken over the years and the photographer who tries to get her to smile for the portraits. Spans most of the 20th century. (16 mins)

Not really a rec since it only just started (3 episodes so far), but if you want some Epic History in your historical anime then there's a Heike Monotagari adaptation. Personally, I think the show is all over the place, but it's by Science Saru so the design has that exceptionally clean, stylized quality and it will probably make all the Best Of lists at the end of the season.

Yeah, I'm not necessarily against the new rule, but the more I think of it, the more I have no idea who is actually going to benefit from it being added.

ARE there any coalies who plan to request just worldbuilding? What kind of fic do you plan to prompt for?

Re: Damn

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt - I ended up nomming it for one fandom, since I had a spare slot anyway, and would be really happy with grain tariffs fic in that fandom, but I will probably still just do an "any" request since it's not like I don't want fic with the characters I nommed too.

But yeah I still don't see any situation where it'll actually help out requesters much. It might help offerers who really want to write worldbuilding? Except you still have to offer at least one character if there are any, so not really. I guess by making it so you only have to offer one char it prevents matching on a notp but that's a use case that seems like it would apply only in the situation where there are exactly three noms for worldbuilding + the notp and that would probably be a bad match anyway.

Re: Damn

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I am one of those. It helps me a lot since I can just request stuff about the world and how it works and don't have to worry about my writer being only interested in the specific character(s) they offered.

Re: Bets

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Untamed cartoon is on the evidence post! Who wants to take bets it'll get in?

I'm betting against, it was a lot more marginal last year and it'll be pretty hard to argue that *all* 6000 crossover taggings are completely mistagged. Especially since the nominator is arguing both that the main difference from canon is the fancy magic, and that most of the taggings are only borrowing the fancy magic.

I loved vol. 1 of the manga but as it kept going it got very one-note-joke. As one-note-jokes the chapters were fun but did not sustain reading it as a series. It never really put in the characterization work the concept needed to be more than that, unless it does after the point where I stopped.

That said I'd still be up for manga-based yuletide fic that *does* put in some characterization!

Someone needs to rely to all these stupid noms with the exchange these people should be participating in rather than Yuletide? You want to write fic based off a fanwork as if that’s its own canon? [community profile] recursiveexchange is for you

Re: Is everyone here from FFA?

I mostly use FFA to actually talk about fandoms and I've never had problems with the mods. With some exceptions, freezing mostly seems to happen with 1) blatant trolling, 2) repetitive wank that has been going on for 300+ comments, 3) some kinds of shitposting, though admittedly I wish more shitposting was frozen, not less.

Oh yes indeed Mononoke. I did peek at Heike Story, though I am dubious. Will pick it up if someone requests it though.

genuine question, sparked from reading through this evidence - ignoring personal feelings towards the writing/philosophy/politics of it all, do you think Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (lesswrong) would be eligible for Yuletide? It certainly feels like enough of its own thing to make it in, but at the same time it really does feel like it's skirting the edge of eligibility
