Wow there is some obvious socking going on in chocbox.

Protip: be more subtle with your identical requests and dnws, people.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-03 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Socking is against the rules for CB, right? Report it to the mods >:) Sow chaos. Make them have to kick out their friends >:)))

(Anonymous) 2021-01-03 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I have done double sign-ups myself before, and probably will again in the future.

Just, yikes, don't be so obvious about it! Disguise your socks, people!

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
FFS. Get off your high horse.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
high horse?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. High horse.

Why would someone want to stir up trouble by running to the mods over literally nothing? The mods can see signups. If there's a problem, they will deal with it. Let them do their jobs without adding to its pressures.

Go to the mods if someone is engaging in cyberbullying behavior, or deliberately bashing their recip and/or their requests, or deliberately hitting their recip's DNWs, or doxxing someone.

+1 forever and ever

Please don't go stirring up trouble! Let the mods do their jobs.

Double-post from above, but I almost got booted from an exchange a while ago because the DNWs in my signup was apparently identical to another person's signup.

The mods thankfully saw reason when it became clear the other person had a habit of literally copying-and-pasting all or part of other people's DNW lists and requests into their signups.

It was stress I did not need, and only occurred because some busybody "reported" me to the mods. Thanks, jerk.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-03 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
AO3 made me sock up by accident, kind of. Some bug duplicated my sign-up so I was signed-up twice with the same username and identical requests. No clue how it happened, but it was a pain in the arse to fix. >:(

(I'd socked up for real in the past, but I hope I wasn't quite that obvious about it. Not this year, though, because I'm trying to cut back on exchanges.)

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how people can be so casual about it. When I do it I am so so paranoid about making sure there are no overlapping requests or similar interests or anything that might link one account to another. But I guess the mods don't really actively pay that much attention.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
They probably will this time, though, because they forgot to force fandom requests/offers to be unique, which means they're going through every single one after signups close to check. There's a note about it on one of the recent comm posts.

Damn, DNW lists all look so similar to me anyways. How petty of that person!!

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon.

Something very similar happened to me a couple of years ago.

I had a busybody complain to a (non-YT) mod that I was someone’s sock because we shared a (canon) pairing in a mid-sized fandom. Um. What?!

This person I was supposed the sock of and I had no other fandoms in common. In our one shared fandom, we both gave a couple of prompts for our shared pairing that were (sort of) similar, but were also incredibly common stuff for that fandom and pairing.

One of the mods was quite sensible and could see it was groundless, but one of the others was a complete nightmare about it. It took weeks to resolve.

The really pathetic part was that this busybody who went to the mods apparently just wanted to be able to boast that they had “unmasked” a sock. They went looking for anyone who could possibly be targeted as a suspect and went all out on it, no matter how ridiculous it was. They just wanted to be able to lead a witch hunt.

I haven’t participated in an exchange since.

I haven’t participated in an exchange since.

... but you're on _coal.

Sounds fake tbh.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-10 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT. So if you're not participating in an exchange, you are not permitted to visit places like _coal? Huh?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
You're claiming that you had a bad experience years ago and haven't participated in exchanges since, yet you're on a pretty inactive post that only a small section of coaltide participants (which participation is also dropping, judging by comment numbers over the entire Yuletide event) care about.

If those things are true... why? Why are you here? What could possibly justify sticking around when your defining experience is "mods ran me out of an event?" You've just been hanging around for multiple years to stick it to the man?

I hope not.

Why would someone not participating in a fanfic exchange for an unspecified period of time mean that they don’t look at _coal?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-07 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I once had someone copy my DNW list word-for-word in Yuletide (and my list wasn't generic in its phrasing, so it was definitely copied), and it could have looked really bad for me since we shared several fandoms as well. If I had to guess, they surfed the letters/app for others in the same fandoms & just cribbed other people's stuff for their own letter.

Thankfully no one noticed or reported, but it's a sign of why playing detective on your own isn't always the best approach.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-07 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This has happened to me too! I think it was just a newbie who shared one of my fandoms, saw my request, and then copied half my DNWs and likes without any malicious intent, but I still spent the whole exchange waiting for someone to wank about this clearly being my sock.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-10 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry to hear that caused you stress, coalie!

This is why I absolutely hate sockwank: very rarely is it actually a true case of socking. It's usually people copying and pasting other people's stuff and not editing it, people who know each other, or people who just happen to like the same stuff.

This this this. Yes! A million, billion times over.

This needs to be distributed to every fucking busybody and wannabe detective in fandom. There is an alarmingly large number of people who have been banned from exchanges and/or dragged because of this sort of context-free stalking and other mob mentality stupidity.

Yes, different people do share the same fandoms, pairings, and DNWs. Yes, different people love the same tropes, meaning they will like and request similar things. Yes, many people do "borrow" from other people's DNWs and prompts, and they don't always change up what they have "borrowed".

This has happened to me multiple times and I don't mind at all. Sharing is caring!

What I DO mind is when some idiot with too much time on their hands then goes around wanting to make themselves feel important by playing anonymous detective and then running to the mods with their "evidence". If you're enough of an asshole to make your "evidence" public, the mods may then feel pressured to make a snap decision, which is never a good thing.

Busybodies and drama are a big part of the reason why I don't mod anymore: anonymous wannabe detectives using incomplete "evidence" gained by online stalking that even the laziest police officer would throw out to stir up bullshit.

NC. ITA with your comment about the dangers of people deciding they want to play detective!

I know two girls who were banned from an exchange over similar likes and names. But those similarities were easily explained when you consider the fact that they are actually sisters. So stupid!
