I once had someone copy my DNW list word-for-word in Yuletide (and my list wasn't generic in its phrasing, so it was definitely copied), and it could have looked really bad for me since we shared several fandoms as well. If I had to guess, they surfed the letters/app for others in the same fandoms & just cribbed other people's stuff for their own letter.

Thankfully no one noticed or reported, but it's a sign of why playing detective on your own isn't always the best approach.

This has happened to me too! I think it was just a newbie who shared one of my fandoms, saw my request, and then copied half my DNWs and likes without any malicious intent, but I still spent the whole exchange waiting for someone to wank about this clearly being my sock.

I'm so sorry to hear that caused you stress, coalie!

This is why I absolutely hate sockwank: very rarely is it actually a true case of socking. It's usually people copying and pasting other people's stuff and not editing it, people who know each other, or people who just happen to like the same stuff.

This this this. Yes! A million, billion times over.

This needs to be distributed to every fucking busybody and wannabe detective in fandom. There is an alarmingly large number of people who have been banned from exchanges and/or dragged because of this sort of context-free stalking and other mob mentality stupidity.

Yes, different people do share the same fandoms, pairings, and DNWs. Yes, different people love the same tropes, meaning they will like and request similar things. Yes, many people do "borrow" from other people's DNWs and prompts, and they don't always change up what they have "borrowed".

This has happened to me multiple times and I don't mind at all. Sharing is caring!

What I DO mind is when some idiot with too much time on their hands then goes around wanting to make themselves feel important by playing anonymous detective and then running to the mods with their "evidence". If you're enough of an asshole to make your "evidence" public, the mods may then feel pressured to make a snap decision, which is never a good thing.

Busybodies and drama are a big part of the reason why I don't mod anymore: anonymous wannabe detectives using incomplete "evidence" gained by online stalking that even the laziest police officer would throw out to stir up bullshit.

You sound an awful lot like My IT Skills Include coalie.

Not that I can tell, and even if it was them, it doesn't matter, because the comment you replied to is completely reasonable.

+1

(It was pretty obvious there were several people involved in the IT skills thread. A number of valid points were raised in that thread. So who cares if the person above is one of the people from the IT skills thread? Which I don't think they are, but whatever.)

No, it really isn’t, lol. Where else are busybody amateur detectives getting innocent users who just happen to have similar interests banned other than the socktopus? Most of the exchange circuit doesn’t even ban socks, let alone care enough to sniff them out.

NC. ITA with your comment about the dangers of people deciding they want to play detective!

I know two girls who were banned from an exchange over similar likes and names. But those similarities were easily explained when you consider the fact that they are actually sisters. So stupid!
