COALTIDE Episode IV: A New Hope

It is a period of indecision.
Gaming gone right for some,
coalies successfully snagging
the assignment they wanted,
the first major hurdle against
Yuletide odds is a victory.

However for those not as lucky
to have gotten the recipient they
wanted, coalies can't help but
think about the hidden requests,
missed bullet and gem alike,
they now have to wait months
to get access to.

Haunted by these assignments that
could have been, or perhaps
mourning the gaming attempt that
went awry, coalies tell themselves
that they will get started on their
assignment right away so that they can
treat to their hearts content and
restore happiness to the Yuletide galaxy....

nonesane: This letter is a little intimidating to me--their DNWs have a judgmental tone to them that make me worried they'd be a picky recip. Most of their prompts are also way too open-ended to be helpful. That said, I would love to write for this person because I love BDSM 'verse and they prompt for BDSM 'verse. I am a coalie of simple needs.

sophia_helix: I like a little more likes detail in my letters, but their prompt for something horror-tinged is cool as hell.

Carmilla: I like that this letter has extremely clear likes and DNWs, gives a wide variety of prompts, and seems really enthusiastic. However, I would feel a little boxed in by their requirement for Regency.

skatzaa: Also seems really enthusiastic, and I have a soft spot for a first-time Yuletider. I find their prompts a little too open-ended, but because they list their smut likes that would be helpful for me. Could definitely write for them.

sunsetmog: I also find these prompts a little too bare-bones, though I really feel like they'd be thrilled to receive something for this canon. I do like Johnny-Flynn-the-musician and would feel comfortable doing something crossovery, but there's nothing that specifically grabs me about this letter.

nerakrose: letter is way too vague. Give me something here! And the combination of one-line prompt for pegging plus DNW "anything that's overly smutty" makes it worse.

...hmm, so what I've learned from this exercise overall is that I value having one specific prompt that really works for me much more than I value range, clarity, or overall letter quality.

Yeah, me too.

-their DNWs have a judgmental tone to them that make me worried they'd be a picky recip</i I checked out their DNWs and... I'm not seeing any judgyness at all? They literally say 'no judgement!' in the intro, and they're listed as 'not my cup of tea' which is the most bland phrasing ever.

CYRT

I mean, I guess it goes to show that you can try not to sound judgmental but still sound judgmental. It's not the "not my cup of tea" phrasing that bothers me--that's fine!--it's more the things like these:

When the main plot is a person having amnesia, characters suddenly age regressing into children and characters switching bodies, I tend to stop reading. This is simply because I've seen those tropes done so many times before in fanfiction.

. No hate on submissive women! They just tend to be the default in fiction [...] Please just avoid the "all women and fem-presenting people are automatically submissive in bed, even if they start out taking the initiative"-trope that permeates most of media

And later down in their letter: I love when there's a clear difference between "D/s scene" and "people just deciding to have sex" because sex can definitely happen without anyone taking the lead - something I feel a lot of mainstream erotica forgets, especially when it comes to m/f couples.

None of this is horrific or wanky or anything. It's not the kind of thing I would post in a "Bad Letters" threat here. It just feels like they're using their Yuletide letter to rant about tropes they dislike in a tone that implies the tropes are bad.

Thank you for playing the rating game, coalie! I always have fun looking through these, even if I have no clue what the fandom is about :D

Don't know if you just missed it (it's a little detail), but Carmilla says they'd be happy with Victorian or anything through the 1910s, too.
