What I want the mods to say is that if they catch wind of a DNW violation (from coal or FFA wank or an anonymous tipster) then they will talk to the author even if the recip doesn’t complain or even if they appear to like the fic.

That gives recips plausible deniability that they didn’t complain to the mods and also sets a good precedent. Just because coalie123 didn’t mind that you violated their listed DNW doesn’t mean you shouldn’t assume 69coal won’t have their exchange ruined if you pull the same shit.

Sort of, but with the caveat that they should talk to the recipient first. I'd hate it if the mods blasted my author for a story I thought was okay without even asking me what I thought.

I don’t like that it puts policing on the recip’s shoulders and makes it known to the author that the recip had complained. Most people, especially if they don’t want wank or to hurt the author’s feelings, will lie and say it’s fine just so they can put it behind them.

I don’t need a public shaming, but authors should be put on notice because it’s a risky move.

Example: Fic where ~someone notices that a DNW was included on a fic and mentions it on on coal. Is it the recip or a busybody? Who knows. Recip comments on the fic with gleeful praise. Because the mods saw the wank on coal and it was a clear DNW violation even though the recip liked it, they email the author and say “Hey, we’re glad your recip liked the story but we noticed it contained a listed DNW. In the future, please ask though us so we can confirm with your recip that the DNW is fine and make sure you’re checking DNWs in general just in case your next recip isn’t so forgiving. Thank you!” Mods don’t have to do it if they don’t notice the wank but if they do, it’s good practice. Same with things they consider opt-in. “We know ODAO but in the future please ask us to connect with the recip before writing extreme underage COVID-19 deathfic in the future unprompted. Thanks!”

But if they did that already, you'd never know, would you?

As I said in my original comment, I would like the mods to publicly say they do this so that recips aren’t assumed to be the cause and so that authors have notice that they may get called out.

It's always the recip who brings it up on coal or FFA. Every time you've seen a wank about unrequested period sex or racist cab drivers, the recipient was the one who brought it up to wank about it. I don't know why people try to act like it's someone else.

... It really, really isn't. Other people pay attention to DNW-violating fics besides the recips who received them - do you honestly think the threads discussing them when they're discovered are just the recip complaining and then self-replying for hours on end? You're either being deliberately disingenuous and hoping some OEA like me will argue with you, or you're totally kidding yourself.

Anyone with any sense vagues about not liking their gift, for reasons no more specific than "Learn how to spell." It's safe to assume major, specific wanks are from anon busybodies who let no consort with the devil go unnoted.

Nah, I've received dnw fic and it was jumped on immediately by anons and discussed here on coal. I didn't participate in the discussion at all because I was feeling too awkward about the whole thing to even say anything anon lol.

Untrue. I know because I got a DNW fic that was wanked about three or four years ago and I certainly didn't bring it up.

Same. And mine was borderline and my DNW slightly vague, so while I'd fallen on the side of 'does not hit my DNW' coal fell on the other.

Nope. My biggest fandom exchange hateboner is for an author who wrote ODAO fic that stomped all over the recip's request, complete with a faux-apologetic author's note, and I've brought the situation up multiple times on coal and FFA. I was somewhat familiar with the recip beforehand (they'd written for me in a different exchange), but we weren't friends or anything, much less being the same person. The author was just that obnoxious in how they treated their recip that I've loathed them for years.

The author who wrote the 2nd POV Pilgrimage fic for the person who had like 4 DNWs and one was 2nd POV and then was an asshole about it in their reply when the recip was like ??? is dead to me. Why? Because I also hate 2nd. That anon seriously underestimates how over-invested and busybody the group of people who voluntarily spend their time in a comm made for the over-invested are o.O We wank about hypothetical bad behavior, do you really think we aren’t remembering the DNWs/prompts of people who share our fandoms and got fic that went against them? Most coalies will wank about everything BUT their own personal woes in the specific. We are smart enough to never want to be mentioned on coal but messy enough not to extend that to other people lmao

Yes, some people cannot be helped against their will.

People just sucking it up and writing a polite thank-you for a DNW fic is how writers just keep on keeping on writing DNWs, though.

Tragedy of the commons, really. Each individual DNW recipient may be happier not reporting, but if no DNW recipients report, the overall experience in the exchange is worse as people keep repeatedly receiving DNWs.

In this model the recip has no responsibility if they don't want to. The mods act independent and no one is publically shamed. You have more protection if the mods actual do their job without you having to beg them to. Leave your nice but vague comment or a genuine comment. They're still going to make sure the author knows the rules.

A fair number of DNW recipients certainly feel happier reporting. Many people find comfort in complaining.

I'd hate that. I don't want my authors getting told off over something I did not think merited a complaint to the mods, and I most certainly don't want them told off publicly over something I did not think merited a complaint to the mods.

The mods do check stories in the last week before the collection opens, and contact writers if necessary. (I know this because one year I got the dreaded mod email (actually it was very polite) reminding me that my author had DNWed [mention of canon thing] and I'd alluded to it, which I had really thought wasn't crossing the line but upon reflection it probably was, so I edited it out and came up with a new reason for [plot point] to happen.) I guess though if you're editing up your bus pass and the mods look at your story before you've put in something that might hit a DNW they'd miss it. Also I have no idea if they check every story, which seems kind of like a huge task?
