Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

What are the things that aren't such a huge deal that you'd game away from a recip or default if you were assigned to them, but that still bug you a lot and discourage you from treating them?

Letters without prompts that only have the 'why I like this fandom/these characters' section, prompts that are extremely ambiguous ("what happens after episode 6?", "tell me about A and B's friendship!").

Right now out of 4 requests there are two letters for AC:Odyssey and one of them is exactly this. I might offer it anyway, but it's wouldn't be my dream recipient.

No prompts is the worst.

OT3s. Just not my thing.

(My one exception is Kala, Wolfgang and Rajan from Sense8, because the actual canon of the show made me root for a threesome so hard to keep anybody from being destroyed. It just worked.)

At least those are easy to avoid if people sign up properly.

The reverse is so annoying. There's no way to offer my OT3s while avoiding the more popular ship of two of the three.

Not including your AO3 name in your letter.

Requesting 3+ characters in one or more of your fandoms and listing romance and/or porn prompts in your general likes, but not specifying which ships you prefer. Even if it's "I like any and all combinations of my requested characters for shipfic," that's really useful information!

Requesting multiple characters in a fandom and giving prompts that make it practically impossible to include all of the requested characters in a fic, without specifying that the author's allowed to write just a subset of your requested characters.

The majority, or all, of the prompts are AUs, especially if the in-canon prompts are vague. I could probably give it a shot, but I have... trepidations.

Letters that request "Any" character and don't list the characters.

Don't make me have to go look up your signup/the tagset! It's easier for me to move onto the next letter.

I didn't think I had any, and then I noticed Beast King GoLion in the tag set and sure enough, one of the people requesting has a letter consisting of nothing but GoLion/Voltron variants. So, that. Mix it up a little! Try one fandom that's not just different names on the same characters!

lol, Lunarium is notorious for requesting five different flavors of Voltron in literally every exchange that they do. I actually find it kind of comforting, like a universal constant.

When they make their top prompts require characters that weren't even nominated, or only request one character and everything they want involves shipping that character with other characters they did not request.

Follow the fucking rules. It's not that hard. Most of us manage it.

I have often added into my letters that including other characters I didn't request or that weren't even nominated is fine by me (when that's been the case), and even offered a couple of ideas of things I'd like along those lines if they were hoping to write certain characters I didn't request. When I love every character, that type of thing is okay. But to make your most-desired prompts revolve around a character not in the tagset is bad form. And it's not always newbies who do it, which takes it from bad form to a real asshole move.

“The Favourite (2018)

Oh, these three. Abigail! Sarah! THE QUEEN. I specifically don't want anything where they end up unhappy, but gen, OT3, whatever, as long as they get to be their delightful selves and be HAPPY.“

WHAT’S EVEN THE POINT?????

I'm usually on the side of request what you want, no need to ~take the temperature of fandom and request the prevailing trends, but OOF did they watch the same movie I did?

Dying...that's hilarious. Boy did they miss the dynamics at play there.

Re: Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

Maybe they want their writer to stretch themselves? XD

Seriously though, I can understand that request. If you have three characters all of whom you like who are ruining each other's lives, sometimes you just want a magical handwave that will remove that dynamic so they can all be happy.

I have no idea how one would go about writing that request without taking things entirely AU, but it seems emotionally coherent to me.

Are we sure that they don't want canon compliant fic?

Delightful selves = twee way to be tongue in cheek about how they're assholes but that they clearly don't see it as an issue/they like it

be Happy = OT3 where they're all awful and happy about it? OTP where Anne/Sarah get back together and Abigal is back on top thanks to her marriage?

It's possible that they'd hate the fic I guess, but you could write canon complaint unhealthy relationships that is still a HEA ending from their POV without hitting any of those DNWs. It isn't like they said they think they're pure cinnamon rolls who never did anything bad/who need to be rehabilitated?

They discover their love of sexual humiliation, and it helps them deal with the rest of their interpersonal problems?

They all become vampires, scheme against each other for a century, then get their shit together?

I feel like there are ways to make this work, but they probably aren't what this requester wants.

Re: Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

Requesting ships, then DNWing obvious elements of them.

Especially bad if it's a fandom like Push where the plot part of the prompts always makes sense at most 6 months after canon, not five years. And even if you age her up, he still knew her when she was 13, and it's still going to be weird.

I'll write you your kinky badwrong ship, people. Or I'll write you plot. But I'm not going to write you the delusional version where you pretend the squicky thing isn't integral to the ship.

Re: Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2019-10-30 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much. (Or, why every single year now, I waffle about offering Push and decide at the last minute based on letters. I love it and I love writing it, but wow.)

Re: Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2019-10-30 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Long gushy lists of prompts for all but one of their canons and then one that was clearly tossed in to fill space. If you don't want to receive it, I don't wanna write it.

Re: Letter/Signup Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2019-10-30 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
As someone with a letter that could be taken this way: I do want to receive it! It's just that requests 1 and 2 are for sprawling epics with a lot of characters that interest me equally, while this small, short Fandom has only two characters that I really, really want fic for. Which is why the only prompt is for those two.
