I really want to sign up this year, but I’m avoiding someone who is totally creepy enough to figure out who I am based on congruence of fandoms. Even if they’re new to me fandoms, they’re all fandoms of one and I’m pretty damn distinctive (for the weirdo keeping hyper close track of my online movements.)

I nominated, because I’m still dithering, but it definitely sucks to feel entirely unavoidable even if I sick.

What is your favorite YT gift of all time?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And why. Because contrariness. (And also sometimes we like things.)

An absolutely amazing and beautiful fic that gave me everything I ever wanted and then found a way to give me more. Historical mystery, with pitch-perfect characterization and beautiful prose, long casefic, and tailor-written just for me and my likes. (Though tons of other people ended up loving it too.)

I incoherent squeed, a lot. I still reread it regularly and it's been quite a few years now.

I feel this about Magneto. He calls himself Magneto, why is the canonical tag Erik Lehnsherr?!!

Re: Why is AO3 piping so deeply stupid?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because if another Magento comes up then that whole tag is fucked, see: all the different Batmans, Captain Americas, Iron Mans, Spideys, etc.

The real name > cape name is the one sensible tag convention and I’m glad it isn’t ‘Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr’ or ‘Magneto | Eric Lehnsherr’.

Nice try, but I've never had a less than thrilled recip (my recips have all been multi-paragraph with quotes and multiple things they loved and didn't know they wanted until I have it to them) and, again, I don't post stories-i-mostly-wrote-for-me until the recipe already has a main gift.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The response from my recips would indicate otherwise

Re: Anyone Else Not Doing a Letter This Year???

CYRT,

I think that wasn’t worded properly, it’s not that I don’t care about the fic I receive and I do like receiving a fic but I am generally easy to please and it is not necessarily what I spend a lot of time worrying in terms of an exchange, and so I just don’t think a letter is really necessary if I put everything pertinent in the sign up.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
DC I'm not sure what your interpretation of your recips' comments has to do with cyrt's point, which was that this is kind of a shitty attitude to take into an exchange.

Re: What's it going to take for the YT mods to get rid of the FF.net rule?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
IDK but I wish everyone involved would just admit that aside from a few edge case fandoms, the reason a lot of people want FFN out is that the fic there sucks. A vast majority of AO3 users don't go to FFN for that reason.

Is there bad fic on AO3? Sure. Are there fandoms that still have a better FFN presence than they do on AO3? Sure. But they're edge cases. I cannot name a single Yuletide participant that actually reads fic on FFN. It's mostly teens, and that's fine, I'm glad there's a site for mostly teens to have fun on, but pretending AO3 and FFN are equivalents is just not correct in a vast majority of cases. If my fandom has 1000 fics on AO3 I'm fine with it being out because that's 1000 fics I can read. If my fandom has 1000 fics on FFN there'll probably be less than fifty that are even decent. AO3/Yuletide don't guarantee quality either but FFN almost guarantees a lack of it.

Hell, there are more and more participants who never used a site other than AO3 at all, so acting like we all used to go to FFN and that's why it needs to be counted isn't true either.

DA. Omg, Coalie, I'm so sorry to hear that!

I have experienced the same thing. A former friend turned stalker has a bad habit of trying to hunt me down using our shared fandoms, to the point where I'm going to have to start a new fandom identity myself. And after our last extremely unsettling encounter, I've realized I'm going to have to spread these shared fandoms across two different accounts. I've never had a dental practice before, so it's a new adventure for me.

But this stalking culture is just so unsettling.

Who cares if this person has the same fandoms as you, or someone you want to be friends with, or someone you want to get back in touch with, or even someone you don't like? I mean, who the hell has so much time on their hands that they go through and look for that sort of information when it comes to a stranger on the internet? And all over fanfiction?! JFC.

Have they committed war crimes? Murder? Rape? No? Leave them the fuck alone, FFS. If they want to talk to you, they will.

NC. You don't carry these incredibly unsettling stalking habits over into you real-life relationships do you?

Your posts here, where you righteously defend your behavior, make you sound like a nightmare with serious control issues.

OP. Thank you. That's a really helpful suggestion to link some related Tumblr posts in my letter, or to at least use some Tumblr-style speak. I really appreciate your reply and suggestion! :)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t think it sucks, I just think it’s a relic that doesn’t matter anymore. The reason it stays is because it’s easy to filter. If it became difficult, the mods wouldn’t power through to protect the sanctity of Yuletide.

Ffnet doesn’t allow explicit fic, doesn’t allow RPF, and a lot of the filtering only became a thing after thousands of fics were already posted. I’m not going there to find fic just like I’m not digging up old LJ comms to find stuff old fandoms. Most Yuletiders aren’t in a Ffnet venn diagram. Single fandom tumblrs or zines would be a better metric than Ffn of where fic that’s actually read by the Ao3 crowd is....

If anyone needs more than a good letter to write something for someone, they probably shouldn't be doing exchanges.

OP. I can't help but agree with you on that one! :)

As the nonnie below so beautifully put it: Coalie, if an essay-length letter isn't enough to give you an idea of what your recip is looking for, you're not competent enough to be participating in exchanges.

How much of a fandom presence do you need in order to be "jazzed" for your YT assignment? Is it only sufficient if they post every day? Once a week? Once a month?

I hate to break it to you, coalie, but unless someone is using their IRL, legal name as their AO3/Tumblr/DW/etc handle, their entire fandom identity is technically a sock for that IRL identity.

Get over yourself.

AYRT

No problem! I’ve seen some letters that link to posts to illustrate a quote prompt or to underscore a canon detail they like (a prompt like X loves Y’s lips, tell me more! with it linking to a gifset of all the times X stares at Y’s lips) and I think it’s a happy middle ground for the old all text vs. gifs/pictures wank from a few years back. It seems like it would be a good solution for you fandom’s issues too.
