This is Yuletide, everybody make a scene

I am the sock with the tear-away face
Low-effort with your gift and gone without a trace
I am the "who" when you call, "Who does an exchange without acknowledging their gift?"
I am the wanker blowing through your fics comments
I am the coalie dragging your letter at night
Filling your exchange to the brim with fright!

This is Coaltide!

Re: How do you nominate?

1. Both

I have 12 socks and a lot of invites sitting around in case I need more (which is why I have 12). I nominate things I may request and things from past exchanges I am hoping someone else will offer. I never end up requesting only things I nommed because the tagset always ends up having canons I forgot about but would like to get fic for.

I use the nom shaking trick to see if someone else has nommed fandoms I'm not 100% on, but if it's a fandom I REALLY want then I put those socks to use.

Nom shaking trick? Please share!

Use canonicals to nom your fandom & characters > Change the fandom to something else > hit save. If someone else has nommed them, you will get an error saying those characters have been nommed in [correct fandom you wanted] and you need to disambiguate yours.

This works for uncanonical fandoms too but is a little harder. I just tried to nom a show with no fic and got this error because I made the title be Show (TV 2020) while the other person used Show (TV). I now know I don't need to wast a nom spot because that show and character have been covered by someone else.

Note: if it's a fandom you really, really want, don't leave it up to chance. Other people can delete their noms, and that is the benefit of a nomming sock army. This trick us useful for edge cases, but I always make sure to nominate the fandoms I really want myself even if other people have done it. Trust no one!

Awesome! I also have been enjoying Julie and the Phantoms! I'm excited to know other people are nominating it. Which characters are you nominating?

I only have four, but, yeah, most of them are a mix of things I want, things I hope to bait people into requesting themselves, and then a few ? things just because it's Yuletide and maybe someone will actually write fic for that photo I saw two years ago.

Everything I want to write or receive with my nomination sock army.

I only use the socks to nominate though

The thing is, if the idea is to help someone out so they are able to request or offer the fandom, then limiting it to one character per person might be completely useless to everyone.

You've nommed A, and this person doesn't care about A but would love to request/offer B/C/D. But you are only willing to nom A, B, C, and E (the character another person who has come along later wants), then in the end you've still only fulfilled the wishes of one other person - the later person who just wanted E. Is that any more 'fair' than a first come first served policy?

Same for me.

What's out?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm seeing rejections for If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device, Horse and His Boy, and the Story Break podcast episode about Jar-Jar Binks.

A little of both. Priority goes to want I want to request. After that, if my sock’s got open slots (and it usually does), then I think about things I would like to write if someone wanted them.

The Harry Potter podcast too (no surprise). The Orphan Black sequel is also out.

Is this literally just a "let's fix Harry Potter" podcast? What stones, indeed.

This is a person who doesn't know they can comment to the comm. I doubt they're very aware of Yuletide rules/history/culture, probably just someone who has been dragged in by a friend (the posting friend?) and got the idea that Yuletide is for niche things but didn't process from that that proximity to megafandoms is picked over.

It was the donghua that made the fandom blow up in the first place, people really need to stop trying to squeeze in megafandoms ffs

I think the mods probably made the right call for Horse and His Boy, but damn, that's my favorite Narnia book, I would have liked to see what the request was and maybe treat.

I get not realizing something like The Terror has ticked over into ineligible, but, uh, has Inception ever been eligible for Yuletide?

And come on Actor and Hockey RPF nominators! Your characters are likely eligible, you just have to package the fandom correctly.

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone DLC's also out, as is Therapist R. J. Hill by Panic Volkushka.

Think the TOS novel Crossroads is probably also out, but they're still arguing about that.

Aw, I totally get why Therapist R.J. Hill is out, but I do love it.

I think they should make the same call for Discworld's Monstrous Regiment if someone tries to get it in. One of their reasons was "and Aslan's in the book too", and Vimes is most definitely in MR.
