I would guess RPF or Adaption rule. Cristiano Ronaldo POV or Batman shows up in a Nightwing fic as POV. Can’t jom the character but it isn’t a sin to write them/the recip needed to DNW.

Still sucks but the mods will see this as a better luck next year problem.

But nothing in the rules says you can’t write those characters, just that you can’t nom them. The rules also say nothing about POV options. So you can have a Batman POV where Nightwing finally gets together with Midnighter and it would be entirely within the rules to OD prompt and or OD write...unless the recip DNWs outsider POV and/or Batman.

This is why you can have megafandom crossovers too. You can’t nom DCU but you can write The Fab 5 fixing up the Justice League no problem.

My point is you could nom Batman for any canon in which Nightwing is eligible to be nom'd. Looking at the tagset we have Titans, Grayson, White Knight, Gotham by Gaslight; Batman is an eligible character in all of those canons.

there's a secondary "character eligibility" test for eligible fandoms that are subsets of ineligible fandoms. 1000+ fics (of any length) about a character on AO3 and they're disqualified even if the fandom is allowed, I believe. it comes up a lot with Sports RPF. (e.g. you can ask for Pittsburgh Penguins RPF even though Hockey RPF is way over the limit, but not Sidney Crosby.)

It applies to RPF, but stopped applying to fictional characters a while back.

You believe wrong. That was the case for one year, about five years ago, and hasn't been repeated since because the mods realised it was stupid.

Fandom is big, coalie. I picked a sports RPF person that is likely to be known even to anti-sports kids and a comic book character most of the whole world knows to illustrate my point.

He’s literally the most popular athlete on earth, coalie. And for RPF:fame comparisons, Jensen Ackles has 2.7 million followers on twitter. Ronaldo has 81.7.

I don't want to litigate this overmuch, but despite his fame, he is very much a niche interest in this section of fandom, which is why the reference was striking here. Jensen Ackles is MUCH more likely to be referenced in this comm than Cristiano Ronaldo. Football RPF doesn't really overlap with Yuletide or mainstream AO3 culture at large, and almost all of the people who partake in both are recognizable to me. That's all I meant.

Your mistake is thinking that the only people who would land on Cristiano Ronaldo as a universally recognizable famous person are Football RPF people, even though the whole point was that he was a universally recognizable famous person.

On coal, where two ex-JPOP RPF fans happened to be online at the same time. JPOP stans who were also into Interview With A Vampire, one of them who listed a good mix of various fandoms including hyper-violence religious satire Preacher.

You don't think this crowd of MULTIFANDOM people from around the globe would be bigger than your flist circle? When it comes to the world's most popular athlete?

Well, it's a bad idea on the author's part if nothing in your prompts suggested you'd be into it.

If you hate outsider POV, yeah, it could be coal to you. Add outsider POV to your DNWs next time so authors know.

It's not against the rules, though, as long as your requested and eligible characters feature.

The requested character shows up for the second half of the story (500 words). No insight into them or their motivations; they just do stuff.

If they're around and doing things for 500 words, I think that would count as "featured" for the purposes of Yuletide, coalie.

It can definitely still be coal to the recip! and I as an author would have had them appear across the full fic. But "featured" generally means they appear on-screen for a decent chunk of the fic, and I'd say 50% counts. "Featured" doesn't require interiority. I really can't see the mods dinging this.
