It was me and I doubt that I know you.

Fandom is big, coalie. I picked a sports RPF person that is likely to be known even to anti-sports kids and a comic book character most of the whole world knows to illustrate my point.

Fair enough. I'll continue to doubt this, and speculate, but I wish you a happy Yuletide.

I’ve never written or gotten Futbol RPF for Yuletide, although I am a huge Spurs stan. I live in California. I just turned 27. If you know me, more power to you. Happy Hanukkah.

He’s literally the most popular athlete on earth, coalie. And for RPF:fame comparisons, Jensen Ackles has 2.7 million followers on twitter. Ronaldo has 81.7.

I don't want to litigate this overmuch, but despite his fame, he is very much a niche interest in this section of fandom, which is why the reference was striking here. Jensen Ackles is MUCH more likely to be referenced in this comm than Cristiano Ronaldo. Football RPF doesn't really overlap with Yuletide or mainstream AO3 culture at large, and almost all of the people who partake in both are recognizable to me. That's all I meant.

Your mistake is thinking that the only people who would land on Cristiano Ronaldo as a universally recognizable famous person are Football RPF people, even though the whole point was that he was a universally recognizable famous person.

You think likely the most famous athlete on earth isn't who most of us would go to for an example?

On coal, where two ex-JPOP RPF fans happened to be online at the same time. JPOP stans who were also into Interview With A Vampire, one of them who listed a good mix of various fandoms including hyper-violence religious satire Preacher.

You don't think this crowd of MULTIFANDOM people from around the globe would be bigger than your flist circle? When it comes to the world's most popular athlete?

Football RPF wasn’t even that niche, and it was very much the sort of LJ-big where the majority of people moved on to current fandom spaces with relative ease. A few BNFs spent time there, I’m still running into alumni in random fandoms... I get there are a lot of fandom types who couldn’t care less about sports, but Ronaldo’s cultural influence is genuinely pervasive enough that this is a really strange thing to double down on. Even obnoxious Americans who think soccer isn’t a real sport played by real men and would sooner watch paint dry can name Ronaldo as the top Premier League player.*

*this is a joke

Hey, now, when Americans think of soccer stars, we don't think of Ronaldo. We think of Megan Rapinoe.

what athletes would you accept as universally known?
