I’m predicting here that Guardian is going the most popular fandom in the collection this year. I wish I was into it, but I’m not...

I'm not sure about that. The fandom was at its height last Yuletide, and it still wasn't the biggest one then.

I'm personally placing bets on The Untamed or Gideon of the Ninth this year.

I'm also betting on The Untamed - especially since Guardian was kind of a gateway fandom and a lot of the people who got into it last year are now into Cnovels and their adaptations in general, and anything connected to MXTX is king there.

On this note, I feel a little ridiculous for asking, since clearly they are all the rage in fandom right now, but apparently I wasn't paying attention when it happened and Google has turned out to be completely 100% useless: What exactly is a Cnovel? The closest I have come to determining the definition is "Chinese romance novel" or "Chinese web novel" but maybe I am completely off?

Chinese web novel, yes. The ones popular on the exchange circuit/in fandom in general are the M/M romance ones. (Likewise, cdrama is Chinese drama.)

It's just a chinese online novel, generally referring to the ones posted to various Chinese forums online--some examples of this would be Guardian, written by priest, or The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.

Yes, Chinese web novels. The most popular one in English-speaking fandom spaces is Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which is danmei, the Chinese equivalent of BL, and what The Untamed is based on. (The Untamed is not BL, because of censorship laws.). Guardian was also based on a BL novel.

All translations of the novels are fanmade and thus vary widely in quality, but there are a lot being translated.

Guardian's grown a lot since last Yuletide, but I'm still betting on MDZS being bigger.

Me too, especially since Guardian show/novel fandom is still pretty distinct, but GDC people seem to be treating all four versions as one, so I bet there's going to be a lot of basically bookfic under The Untamed. Also GDC is a much bigger fandom in general. If a Chinese fandom takes it, it'll be The Untamed.

I am irrationally irritated by this and will clearly have to just learn to deal, but Yuletide separates out adaptations for a reason! They are not all the same! Especially CQL and MDZS, and the fact that all of the versions are being conflated is a constant thorn under my skin. There are some requests I'd like to treat, but I'm going to have to get over this first.

There's a girl bunny, a girl wolf, and some other girls. The girl bunny used to fuck the deer, and the wolf guy is in love with her. The wolf girl had a crush on the wolf guy then sort of switched to crushing on the deer guy.

I had assumed fanfic would be more about the deer guy yanking on the wolf guy's tie, or sticking his hand in wolf guy's mouth, or about the part where the deer guy took over a lion gang and became a yakuza boss before he even graduated highschool!

I have no doubt! Sorry, I extrapolated from the conversation coalies had before about the wolf guy (girl?) eating the deer's foot (???) ... I think if I feel really brave over the winter break, I might try and dip my toe in (oops, unfortunate metaphor). It's not really the kind of thing I usually go for but I am feeling intrigued now.

Wolf guy had finally figured out which of their high school drama club members had eaten another member alive. The culprit is a giant bear, who is legally required to take strength suppressors because otherwise he'll accidentally rip your arm off if you shake his hand. Because our protagonist wolf is a moron, he challenged the bear to a secret duel at midnight, but because he's desperate for sempai's attention, he dressed up in drag and went to invite the deer guy to witness the fight. The deer, meanwhile, had taken over a gang of lions at the illegal meat market. He looks very good in a suit.

Then the wolf got beaten up and realized that maybe he can't win, so the deer yelled at him to eat meat to get stronger and offered his foot.
